This is an experiment with an open story; we'll have to wait and see if its successful.

Fancy

You find yourself back in that nightly forest again. The moonlight is painting trees and fern in an exquisite blue shade, and a pleasant breeze caresses your nose. Despite the scene being covered in snow, you do not feel any cold nor do you wonder about that; as in a dream, you take most things for granted. So you just trot on to the next clearing, feeling vaguely curious.

The clearing is, in fact, an opening of the whole forest on one side of a valley. Apparently cut by a river running through, it stretched all the way towards the horizon. On the other side of the vale, forest as deep and ancient as the one you just stepped out of adorned the horizon. The complete lack of any kind of civilisation does not strike you as odd at all.

A noise makes you look over. You look into a face and it makes you feel like… well, imagine that everything you’d ever wanted to achieve was yours, while at the same time you’d be just as happy without anything. It is like feeling the gaze of a being that’s able to look into your very soul...

What do you want to do:
1) Stay and find out who that creature is.
2) Run away from that nosy spy!
3) Leave this thread ASAP
4) Something completely different... what?

Feel free to pick up the pen!

:D

Thanks for the feedback, Slumovsky. :D

However, I realize I've forgotten something important  : I planned to continue the story 48 hours after the options have been posted. Hope that's a good compromise between satisfying curiosity and giving enough people the chance to get involved. The next course of action is determined by simple majority.
Now let's see where this path takes us to; I'm just as curious as you are. ;)

You try approaching the apparition to get a better idea of it, but no step you take seems to get you any closer. Any closer look is denied too - you cannot decide whether you're being simply blinded, or witnessing something that your brain has no means to file away yet. It's eyes continue to rest on you, filling you with a kind of contentment you've never experienced before.

"No need for that. You know me well enough already, friend."

These words - you must have heard them somehow, but they appear less to have been spoken from the outside than coming from your very inner self.

"I am the one who you wish to exist and fear to be just a figment of your imagination. I'm here to welcome you."
(That reminds you of another puzzle; you do not yet know who you are yourself...)
"If you'd care to, I could show the around, but there are some certain dangers on the way", the voice continues, "considering you and your state."

Now what?

1. Find out who you are
2. Ask to be shown around
3. Dangers? *shudder* What dangers? *readies to bail out*
4. How about getting hot with the creature here and now?
5. What was that about my state?
6. Something completely different...

Oh my, 48 hours wouldn’t work for me – I often log into net less frequently than that..:(
And once again my choice is 1:)

:D Now I'm in a bit of a dilemma; should I continue with 1 or 5? Guess I have three options here; I could continue with 1 (first come, first served), toss a coin to decide or I could wait another day to see if someone else posts and breaks the equilibrium. Of course, I could refer to both answers in the next part, but that was not what I had in mind regarding the no-turning-back concept of the story. Any suggestions? Else I'll simply wait another day and toss a coin if no other posts have come forth. :)

Sorry everyone for taking so long to answer. Been rather busy these past few days, you know. ;)

5.) What was that about my state?

"Ah yes, we would have come to that sooner or later too. Now, how should I put it... you're dead."

A short while after checking the functionality of your vital organs, you prepare to protest: This is just a dream, and who are you weird apparition to know anyway? - but before you manage to utter any word, the answer appears in your consciousness.

"Dead, dreaming... what's the difference? You've known several deaths (you raise one eyebrow warningly) er...dreams to last for quite a while, and this will be one of them. Speaking of that - I'm sure you were also able to influence your dea... dreams now and then. Yes, perhaps it would be best to think of it as one of those - you may choose to steer, but the outcome is unpredictable. Be content to know that you are here. Though even I don't know who exactly you are - yet. But where were we..."

1. Finding out who I was?
2. Getting an idea of what this place was?
3. Dead? That's it... outta here?
4.Taking a closer look at this creature pretty soon now...?
5. Wait, wait - influence?
6. Something completely different?
