And I thought ear problems were only found in dogs with hanging ears...
If her ears get sore from moist, there might bee too much hair in the ears. You could try to pluck it out. That hair prevent sufficionet air circulation in the ears. Water can get down no matter what. Also investigate her ears in a good licht, and see if there is any wax or loose hair has collected to some filthy mat. It is able to hide good, and tere are plenty of places where it can hide. You can buy some ear cleaner for dogs that has a mild local anesthetic effect, and it can be used preventive. Also be careful what you use for ear cleaning. Some tissues have a quite hard surface that will make the ear more tender. Most clotes have a too coarse surface. My bet experience is a good, unperfumed toilet paper, or paper towel. It is tender to the skin for good reasons, and it has a good drying effect. |

First of all, I'm assuming that you finish a full course of the vet's prescribed medication, not just stop using it when the symptoms clear up, because an infection lasts longer then the symptoms do.
What are you feeding her? Poor diet can lead to ceceptability to yeast infections -- make sure you're feeding a high quality food (no corn or wheat/grains in the ingredients, and the first 2 - 3 ingredients listed should be meat products, preferably "meal" not "bi-product") Ear yesast infections can also be a sign of a developed allergy to the food as well. You might also try the pharmacy over-the-counter yeast infection creams for women, they're safe to use on your dog's ears (many have the same ingredients that vet prescribed medications have). Also try using a 50/50 mix of rubbbing alcohol and apple cyder vinegar to clean the ears with after she does anything in or near water (rain, shower, swimming), put a little bit in the ear immediately after and hold there with a cotton ball for at least 30 seconds, it will dry up the water and kill any bacteria etc.. |

Wirehair seems to have hit the nail on the head here. My dogs were constrantly in and out of the water both fresh and the sea. The vet clipped the hair inside the ears and it lessened the problem greatly. Interestingly he did state that the sea was by far the better water to get the dogs to swim in, not that they needed an excuse, because it was good not only as regards their ears but their coats improved in condition. They were rinsed in fresh water afterwards or else the salt made them itch! Pokerman |

Yeah, pedigree is mainly corn, it can cause a lot of yeast/ear/coat/digestive problems sometimes, since dogs weren't meant to eat corn/grains/wheat.
First off, it depends on what kind of stores you have around... Stop getting dog food from grocery stores, it's generally very low quality to begin with. The only food I'd recommend that's sold at grocery stores, costco to be exact, is the Kirkland brand dog food, it's actually some of the best stuff I've seen around, and incredibly affordable, no bi-products, no corn, no wheat, etc... All the dog's I've known, and fed it have done really well on it. Other then that, if you go to a pet store, that opens up your choices a bit.. Look for brands like: Back to basics, Blue Buffalo, California Natural, Canidae, Canine Caviar, Chicken Soup for hte Petlover's Soul, Eagle Pack, Flint River, Enova, Natural Choice, Solid Gold, Wellness, You'll notice, probbaly, that these brands I listed are a bit more expensive, but the thing is, you actually feed your dog a lot less because she's getting more neutritian from the more expensive food. With a cheap food, you usually have to feed a huge quantity to make your dog feel full and satisfied, because well, there's not much in it other then fillers. Table scraps are actually okay for your dog, well, not all scraps, but stuff like boneless meat (especially chicken), rice, vegetables like carrots, collyflower, brocoli, etc, fruit like apple, (no grapes!!), etc... Also, your dog might benefit from some yogurt with her kibble,... Raw egg (whole, with the shell) is good for your dog too on occaision. If you wanna give some raw treats, you can give raw chicken (with bones), and raw fish. |

My Dane has had constant ear problems. It wasnt an ear infection, was a yeast infection. A yeast infection is more likely the cause if the problem is related to water entering the ear.
This problem is both moisture and diet related. What I have been doing is mixing Regular white vinegar 50/50 with bottled water. I use a large eye dropper and fill his ear half full of the solution. Flop the ear over and rub the base of the dogs ear for about 1min and then run! ..unless you like the smell of vinegar on you. Let the ear stay damp with the solution for about 10min. Use cotton balls or gause to clean the exterior part of the ear. After youve removed any excess dibris and solution, mix 75% rubbing alcohol and 25% water. Hold it in for 30sec while massaging the base of the ear. give the doggy 5min of shaking his/her head and then clean the excess from the outer ear. Repeat this ever other day for at least 2 weeks. As for the diet, try to puchase foods low in perservatives. Ive got my dog on "Wellness", Its very expensive but has done wonders. You dont have to go this far but look into high quality food and stay away from generic's. As a side note. Smell the dogs ear, if it smells bad, its an infection. If the visible part of the ear cannal is red and inflammed with no smell, its most likely a yeast infection. Also, Mixing the Vinegar and alcohol together will ruin the solution. Vinegar to raise the PH on the ear, alcohol to dry the moisture. Dont mix them together. If after a week the doggy is still rubbing at their ears, a Vet appointment will be needed to check the ear drum for rupture or foreign bodies lodged in the ear. Feel free to PM me with any questions |
