Here's something I never knew about until recently. Mares have hymens. Or ... at least what I believe to be a hymen. If I could get some confirmation about this, it would be most appreciated. Thank you.

The answer is yes, young mares do have hymens. It usually dissappears of it's own accord by age 3. :lol:

was a shock to me many many yrs go while i was fingering then fisting a hot willing young coming of age mare and i found this barrier in there that i,d never knew about b4)))

Ok a newbie question for you: if you fist an unbred filly 3 years old, is there the possibility that you can cause harm to her,even if you are very careful , and you use lube ?This is the last think i want to do to her, if some day , i will find one willing filly , in her first heat...
Well I ask you this because i suppose that ,well ,since she is young ,and being unbred , she would be much tighter ,at least that's what I think...

a mares hymen can tear if she does anything that would put strain on it ... and it can be quite painful for them. where i work, if we were going to breed a maiden mare ... either via AI or live cover, we would first check to see if her hymen is intact. if it is it would be broken before doing any of the procedures.

To answer Mach's question ... if you were to fist a younger mare whose hymen is still intact there is a very good risk of getting kicked, as in my expereince they seem to find it to be quite painful... once it is broken howerver they will enjoy it much much more ... and yes you are very right ... maiden mares (mares that have never been bred) are deffinatly much tighter, but not by much

These are the commonly known ones, anyways.

To add to Stripes
Be cleen as in wash.
Wipe her down so you do not bring in dirt
some lube is good
Fingers first
Make sure she is very willing
Kick can be more than a pain in the leg.

We required vet checks on outside mares that way we know we have no problems

I would agree with what both Stripes and rus80 said. As noted getting kicked,by any horse,if sever enough could do some very serious damage. There a lot of "power"in those hind quarters and they know how to effectivly use it.

I play games with one of my boys, one game.
I take a 20 foot scrap of roled plastic water line and push it through the grass. He will track it and pounce on the frount end. If I roal it so it rases out of the grass he no matter how high it is he can wheel around in an instant and kick the end with all 4 hoofs. Each strike it moves so he adjusts each strike to connect with it.

Unlike Stripes, I've never had a problem breaking mare's hymens. I've only broken five or six so far. All except one was in breeding them AI. They shift their weight and all, but none has even hinted at lifting their feet at me :) Of course you need to be VERY aware of what they are doing, its really easy to get very, very hurt. Mares and horses in general are very difficult to work with and around :)

We picked apples out of an apple tree in his paddock with a basket on a pole.
When we left with our apples he having watched us picked up a stick and poked apples so they would fall down to him.
He also played socker kicking a basket ball back to us.
He was an only foal
would never raise a nother stud like that though we just had no one for him to play with. Looking back he should have been out with a bread mare or two. Back then there was no dna testing so the registry would not have been very happy with the added exposure.
I never took pictures as I had to hold the plastic pipe also sadley it would probably not be a good thing for some one to reconise him eather.

I'm back her again , because as i said before i bought a mare that is maiden...altho i can't spend much time with her at the moment , i know that someday i will have the time to mate her ...My question is , since she is maiden , what are the risks of breaking her hymen ? I know that this can only be done wether by a stallion ...or by my hand...you said that when her hymen is broken she will experience a certain degree of pain...one of the risks is off course being kicked by her , but i ask if after this experience is there any chance that she will not be willing to mate anymore, since she will asociate fisting with the pain caused by deflowring ? Also is there acertain technique to do this in order to minimize stress and risks for her ? And how hard to broke is the hymen ?

It is perfectly fine to break a mare's hymen, most won't even notice. Some will, and those may need surgical help or restraint, chemical or otherwise. Some will react very negatively to being torn, since it is actually tearing the tissue. It will bleed as well, usually not very much.

You will not need to break her hymen to mate with her unless you are horse sized :) The hymen is about 4-6" inside her body. Add her hips, and unless you are 8" plus, you aren't going to touch it.
