For the first time, I popped into the chatroom this evening, it quite took me aback because I had never been in a chat room before and I was overwhelmed not only by the speed of messages but by the jargon!

Is there a specific way of addressing each other, is there an explanatory site to get an idea of what the codes mean i.e. ty and asl etc?

I am a one finger typist and judging by the speed of the chat I shall never be able to join in!!!

pokerman :welcome: to the forum and you are most :welcome: in chat also.

Don't let it scare you or put you off...We all felt that way in our first few visits and we all understand how daunting this can be to someone unaccustomed to it all.

There's not much in the way of 'jargon' and what there is you will quickly pick up.

NOBODY will laugh at you for being unfamiliar with the environment...if something baffles you...just ask.

The thing that we find objectionable is inappropriate behaviour and attitude...minors lying about their age (they are quickly found out) and those who just will not read and follow the basic rules.

'Lurkers' (those who just sit on the sidelines and take no active part...after all it IS a 'chat' room) are not welcome.

As with any other aspect of the forum, it works so well because we do have, and observe these 'rules'.

as for Jargon...You will be asked your 'asl'...This is simply age/sex/location.

'PM' =personal (private) message but you must ask permission to do this.

Any other terms you find mystifying...just ask :D You will pick it up surprisingly quickly.

But the main thing is...just be 'yourself', make a reasonable effort to take part... and enjoy the company.

btw..many of the terms used are explained in the rules, which you should read before you take part.

Look forward to seeing you there sometime. :) :friends:

Oh yes...one other thing...

This is really in the wrong section.
There is a thread set aside especially for all matters relating to Chat.

Hello pokerman...and welcome to the forum and to chat. As fester stated in his reply it does get easier over time to be in the chat room and keeping up with the conversations. Sometimes there are more than one going at a time so I used to find it helpful to pick one and follow that one for a while...you'll catch on.

As for chat jargon, here are a few that are used frequently in the chat room...keep in mind most of the abbreviations use the first letters of each word in the phrase, just to shorten typing time. You as a two finger typist will love this! *grin*

a/s/l = age/sex/location (always answer this if asked and some nights it's asked a lot)

ty = thank you

yw = you're welcome

brb = be right back (means someone is stepping away for a moment or two)

afk = away from keyboard (much like brb, but usually for a longer time and they won't be paying much attention)

hb = hurry back

LOL = laugh out loud (something was funny)

LMAO = laugh my ass off (something was VERY funny)

btw = by the way

Those are the basics that are used regularly in chat...there are others, but if they come up and you don't know...never hesitate to ask, we're always willing to help.

Hope to see you very soon in chat!

errrrrrrr what about :thinking:

ROFL = Rolling on floor laughing
ROFLMAO = "" "" "" "" "" """ "" "" "" my Ass off
PML = Pi :censored: ng myself laughing
bbl = Be back later
OMG = Oh My God!
tc = take care (when wishing someone well)
wb = welcome back (when someone returns after being away for a short time)

and we often just use a part of someone's name to save time/typing
ie. you might like to shorten my name fester to 'fes' or perhaps arctic wolf to 'wolf','wolfie', or 'arc'. etc

And just like all other parts of the forum, English is the language, and we do not talk religeon or politics! (unless in private by mutual consent)

We do not give out personal info' in the public room...This is also done in Private by PM (these things are all in the rules)

:whistling:

Crikey! Now ya know more than we do! :crazy: :fool:

Well, I really appreciate the feedback, some of the mystery has been cleared and I do at least have something to start with. I will certainly study the link you supplied Fester3156 to gain even more insight into the methods involved.

Talking to my neighbour this morning he said it was as if I was using my mobile phone for texting, "DOH!" something I do not have and do not want is a mobile phone! So that puts the cap on that one!

As for posting in the wrong forum, my apologies to the moderators it was not intended to offend.
Regards Pokerman

I remember you from the chatroom, pokerman, and I thought everyone was very helpful when you said you didn't know what the acronyms meant. People are usually very understanding about that in the room.....never hesitate to ask....we're always willing to translate. The reason we abbreviate so much is because it's sooooo much easier to type things that way.
