Curious, would you eat your pet? Growing up on a farm, one just.. well.. eats the pig when it gets fat enough, no matter if its a pet or not. I've had horse as well, oh that was good meat. Horse taste like beef to me, but I'm not sure why horse isn't a popular entry on the menu.

I'd definitely want to try cat and dog, but would probably need to go over to asia to get a taste. If I still owned a dog or cat, I probably wouldn't eat them. I'd eat a horse :) Yum.

What is your view of eating your pet?

No, I do not eat mammals of any kind. It's not because they're cute, it's because I am a mammal myself, and I feel the other mammals are worthy of just as much respect as any humans are.

I've had several friends who work in slaughterhouses, and I have heard a lot of gruesome details that I will spare you all. In my country, the general opinion is that: "Oh, but if you buy meat from animals that have been slaughtered within the country, then you know they were treated well." It's deception though, the conditions are really bad, here just like everywhere else. I think most countries keep telling their population that their own slaughterhouses are such nice places. I've also met and spoken to people who transport animals to the slaughterhouses, and a lot of them don't care at all about making the last journey a nice one.

Seriously, I'd never eat the meat from someone I loved, or from anyone else of the same species either. That'd be like non-zoo people killing humans for food.

I do however respect meat-eaters. It's up to each person to debate with their own conscience, and come to their own decision what they feel is right for them. A lot of my friends eat meat, but I do not rub my feelings in their faces.

I have my own personal opinions, and in my ideal world, no one would use cows for production. They'd keep cows like people keep dogs, for companionship, for their love and affection. Seriously, people who don't believe cows are just as loving and wonderful companions as dogs and horses can be, they've just met cows during the wrong circumstances.

But the ways of the world is not up to me, or up to anyone else either. This is my views on it, and I respect those of you who have another view, even if I may not agree with it.

There's no need to argue about anything like this, and we all should be able to discuss the matter, without anyone offending someone else.

I seriously think you have a good view on this matter, Lycan_kouji. You are consistent and you know how you feel. :)

Some people who can gladly eat cows, would find it upsetting to eat dogs. I find it quite strange.

Interesting point Svan.

I personally wouldn't go out of my way to find out what dog tastes like, but then I've got an affinity for dogs  .

Maybe it's just that I don't personally view cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry as companion animals I can relate to, but I do like a nice steak or chop on my plate ^_^ . I can understand the conflict for those that do though.

I agree this is something we should be able to discuss while respecting others viewpoints (and hopefully sparing the Mods unnecessary headaches ;) ) and look forward to seeing how others feel.

By the way, I voted no in the poll - I wouldn't eat my pet. I would however eat an animal I had raised for meat.

I sowwy - but this is tettering right on the edge of vegetarian/vegan vs. carnavour - to many heated discussion in the past on this subject - there is one remaining thread still open on the topic if you MUST discuss it - but this is a taboo subject for the most part...
