Actualy trish, irish wolfhounds are the tallest dogs. The biggest dogs, as far as weight and body mass goes, would be either st. bernards or mastiffs.

Irish Wolfhound are not as equipped as you may think. They are, as already mentioned, the tallest dog breed. Sighthounds (and the IW is one) are generally not heavy equipped, compared to their size.
If you are about to choose a dog breed from the genetial equipment, remember that sighthounds are generally less interested in sex than many other breeds.

Choose a sighthound if you like their temper and have the space to allow them to run with those impressing speeds they need to run. Having sex with a sighthound is as rare and lovely as a Norton motorbike that starts at first attempt.

Never had any trouble starting the old norton, just a slight oil smear at the back of the c/case. Yes the tail light were alwas a problem on my MK 5 jag. Now down to the dogs, from my own experance I have found that the I.W. are like the Affie, long and thin not much in diamiter even at the knott. If you want something a bit thicker try a S.B. or a Newie ( both are solid and heavy also they are very strong) or a british mastif so I have heard.

Yes, but thats because it is an old Norton...

I agree that Mastiffs etc. are much bette equipped than I.W's but on the other hand I'd rather share my life with an I.W. (or other sighthound) than a mastiff, newf, or what i could come to think of as well equipped. Life is making compromises.
Should I select a dog after equopment, I would go for someting short at thick, the I.W. would be wrong choice here. But then again for me that is low piority. I'd just feel better about the I.W.'s if they were not with such a vulnerable health, and thats so far why I never had one.

It was only a sixtys model eazy two norton. Yes an I.W. can have problems with health but they need a lot of space to run around in. A lot of the larger breeds have health problems mostly from not getting enough exersise. Yes I.W. and sighthounds are tall, if you want someting a bit smaller and thicker you could try a large lab, St B and Newies are very thick and fairly long down there when fully mattured plus they can weight between 140 to 170 lb.

Forme the right dog is one that will enjoy being with me, and I with him for a dog's lifetime, even if that does not mean so long a time with an I.W. I love the I.W.'s and most other sighthounds because of theur behaviour, and temper. Excercising is no problem, the wirehaired gyus need loads of running too.
May other breeds be better equipped, it is not something that i would bother about.
I have seen what can happen when someone buy a dog with his eyes. That is something I would take care to awoid!

I recently put my Irish Wolfhound down.

I do have to disagree with Wirechair. I have had several Wolfhounds over the years and also several Danes. I found them to be very similar in the size of their genitals and very sexually aggressive. Maybe not as horny as a Labrador, but certainly no slouches in the thrusting and shooting department:)

Maybe some sighthounds are not terribly interested, but my WH's were always interested. They were more interested in other people, unforunately, but I think that is true of many breeds of dog, as many dogs will see their owner as just that and not a sexual partner.

Sad to hear you loosing a freind.

May I ask how old yur IW was, when you had to....

I feel sure that you talk about american bloodlines, and I am talking about european. There might be a difference here. I know deerhouns better, and if you ever saw "Keeping up Appearences", they compare to Onslow at 6.a.m. with a hangover. I think of the deerhound a s I.W-lite, maybe that is too easy.

Size, or not i like IW's and deerhounds, and hope to make one or another my companion in a not so far future.

Hi Wirechair and thank you for your condolences:)

He was six years old and developed osteo-sarcoma, which is very common in the IWH.

Actually, my last came from the states, but the two prior to that were imported from Irleand and England.

They are an extremely gentle breed and are the tallest breed in general, however, as you are correct in mentioning, they are not the the largest, as far as weight goes.
