:P First Post! ^_^

Today, I went for a walk in the woods and it was rainingl I have always liked walking in the rain (it's really soothing). Then I looked up and jumped because there was this buck standing right there, not moving, and it was just staring at me. I backed up a little to show I wasn't after it, and I was about 10 feet from it. After that, we were just staring at each other for like to minutes. Then, it walked closer to me a few steps. But then, it took off a second later. This wasn't the first time I just walk looking down and look up to see a deer standing right there, but does anyon have any ideas of how to get them to just stay for awhile and let you "play" with them? That would have been great, but it did look interested for a few seconds, maybe it was my smell when it got in range to pick up more of my scent. Would anyone know what to do?

[PS, I am very sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, if so, please move it to the correct spot]

I've had some close encounters with wild deer before - close enough to make photos without fancy lenses - and from my experience they're not likely to let you get even nearly close enough to even touch them, let alone anything else. Most of the time they just run. I'm pretty sure deer have spotted me more often than I have spotted them. Some might be a bit more comfortable around humans than others (for example if they're fed during winter or live in populated areas) but I doubt you'll ever get a wild one to really trust you.

oh, and :welcome:

Wouldnt it be absalutely amazing... if the deer came up to you.. and in the rain he licked you..and you were so intimate between each other and then he mounted you...I would LOVE that! And in the woods... just you and the deer...how erotic!

yeah, i'd also really like to see that.. it's such an erotic fantasy... but i'm afraid this could be only a not realizeable fantasy forever.. But think of the phrase "never say never" :)

I go and pester wild deer every once in a while, and I've been able to get a vague idea of their personalities, but I don't expect to ever be able to touch them, much as I'd like to. Being wild animals, they just aren't as cuddly as house pets, their idea of being friendly is a lil nosebump or a lick on the face, they don't get very physical and they aren't comfortable being crowded close together. Not to say it's impossible to pet one, but there's a better chance of me being attacked for pissing them off instead.

I suppose I could undermine the park rangers and feed the ones I've been hanging out with, but I'd much rather have them interested in me than just grabbing whatever handout they can get before taking off. Domesticated ones are really the only safe and likely chance, but there's only one public place in the entire US that I know of where you can.

 It's neighbors like those that make you question humanity. If nothing else, psychological problems.
Not to mention, isn't it illegal to shoot... much of anything in an area involving homes? I know it is where I live. Unless you are using a bow, and the homeowners don't have 'no tresspassing' signs posted.
In any case, I hope you gave that neighbor a good talkin' to.

Funny you mention that. I too, have found myself close to deer when I least expect it. And, like you, it is when I am not really looking where I am going. I think it may be they might be able to sense if you are of danger or not because if you were, then you wouldn't just walk right up to them in the open. So yeah, too bad I never thought of that though or I might have tried to get closer. Seeya.

Aww.. Sad to hear that, nghtdemon, unfortunately it tends to be a common end for such stories I've heard. That's about when I'd start having more serious thoughts about shooting back on their behalf, or at least starting a dedicated catch-and-release program for as many yellowjacket nests as I can pitch into open windows.

I'm kind of divided on hunting, I'm more disgusted by the attitude that can (but not always) creep into it, and gaining the trust of your targets to make them easier to shoot is just unthinkably wrong.

Thing with deer is, they have extremely good sense of smell, but have very poor vision, they dont see color. The biggest reason that deer was standing there staring at you for so long was problably because he knew something was there but couldnt see it. Your really lucky that it wasnt rutting season when you came across that buck because he could have attacked you, and not in a good way. Deer are just too untrusting to let you get near them if they are wild, where i live they are all over the community. No matter how much time or how used to seeing humans they get, they arent going to let you get too close.

And as far as the "neighbor shooting" issue, i sure hope it was hunting season because if not, you could get them in BIG trouble with the local Game Wardens.

I venture to guess he was as surprised to see you and you to see him. Deer, like many animals, have a flight or fight distance. His one step toward you might have been on the edge of fight but then desided to take off instead. I feed deer at my home and I've had the great opportunity to watch how aggressive they are toward one another. I've also watched them fight each other over the feed. I would hate to be at the wrong end of those hooves. Deer are exteme athletes and I doubt they would have much trouble with an average human being. Be careful!!!

On teh other hand, it's a great fantasy thinking about having a wild beast like a deer bang the hell out you!!! That would be fun..........probably!!

I got to spend some time with some whitetails at a friend's place, they were odd animals to get used to. They definitely don't like being petted, if you stroke them down the back they will sort of drop down and away from your hand. BTW they could eat hot peppers.

The owner's comments was, they're pretty much hard-wired in their instinctive actions/reactions and they aren't as adaptable as a dog or horse to unique situations.

They would let the doe roam the house, she would explore around and pull things off shelves. She would shoulder-surf someone surfing the web, irt was really funny to see her perk up with a "Huh?" whenever the screen changed.
