seems to me that its easy to know the sex of a horse is by smell in dark visits. To me at least a stallion or gelding has a sharp musky funky smell. mares have a sweet smell like with a little musky bits but more like spring padock smell.

I agree totally. Stallions have a stronger smell still, and a mare in heat is also easy to detect by smell because it's stronger. I can't get enough of the musky smell of a stallion.

My favorite part about mares is their smell. A little bit of everything. Hay, sweetness, sex (how do you describe the smell of sex??) even their butthole is clean smelling most of the time (really!). Stallions can vary widely depending on how well they are kept. A nice clean stallion cock has a great musky, meaty smell to it. But if the stallion hasn't been taken care of......ughh, cheeeeesy! Nasty skanky  But ya gotta love their size....How can you NOT love the size?
BTW, I read recently that lions in the Ngorogoro crater prefer male zebras as prey (not herd stallions, but males from a bachelor group) rather than mares.....I wonder if they can smell the difference from far off? This post has been edited by equineslurp on Apr 12 2007, 04:01 PM |

I love that grassy smell on their breath!
Then there are other smells, like straw, that you'll get a whiff of and instantly wonder, "Where are the horses?"" I had a fun experience at The Alamo in San Antonio - it was in the evening and the carriage rides had stopped, but I walked past the building and strongly smelled horse piss. It was like the herd was right there. I realized I was walking past the spot where the carriages waited, and there was piss and manure ground into the pavement and curb. ...now if I were really, really zoo, I would pry up some flakes to freshen up the hotel room... :P |
