The words (and actions as Bitchfool said) are different for males and females.

Females get 'spayed' (female sex organs removed)

Males get 'neutered' (also known as being 'castrated') - (where the male organs [balls] are removed)

The actions have the same effect - removal of the capability to have little dogs :(
