I'm not sure if anyone else gets annoyed, but it kills be to see people typing words that don't exist. For example "wud" instead of "would" or "dis" instead of "this". Yeah that gets on my nerves, I think if people want to post something or be in the chat, they should at least have to use common sense or be less lazy and actually type out the word. Abbreviations are okay, just not all that other crap haha. Just a suggestion, I can't be the only one that gets annoyed by this.

We don't correct bad spelling or bad grammar around here. This is an international site, and MANY of the people who come here do not speak English as their first language.
Correcting spelling and grammatical errors would just be downright rude. |

The English language is one of the hardest to learn for any non brit(apart from a few countries) but it is the most common spoken tongue, so I understand and accept some differences but we all have a spellcheck facility that does the job for us, unfortunately it uses the belief that the writer is already fluent in english so knows what is spelt correctly and what is not, I myself find the spelling of the word tongue often used as tounge which for a brit looks odd but don't forget that our brain has the ability to read almost any word despite the spelling because we look at the word and our brain see's the first and last letter then finds what letters should be between them along with remembering what was read before this word and fills in the gaps so tounge becomes tongue just by using what you know of language, it's incredible when you think about it just how powerful our minds are,

I have met and made many friends here on this site who's 'spelling' is somewhat less than 'perfect'. Regardless of where a person comes from, their understanding of the written word in 'English' to me, their 'literary' skill etc., is imaterial. What counts in my book is that person's individuality and their willingness to be that 'friend' to me. :friends: 'English' (my native tongue) is one of, or perhaps the most enigmatic and ridiculously contradictory languages! As a 'second' language (and being the only acceptable one here) it can be a most daunting prospect for any non-English speaking person to communicate effectively...What you seem to be missing here is that they at least make an effort to try! Perhaps those of us who feel annoyed about the ability of others to adequately express themselves, should perhaps try learning to speak and write in say...Chinese(?)! :whistling: I am a 'member' here...NOT a 'judge' of others! :boxing: |

 Oops
 ..on reviewing my last post I see that I spelled a word incorrectly. Shock! Horror! 'Imaterial' is wrong! wrong! wrong! It should have TWO 'M's'! ie. 'immaterial' (Now some people will get pissed off with me) (I can get 'em wrong too sometimes!) :whistling:   |

WOW well I didn't mean to offend, I'm not talking about typos and obviously people that english isn't their first language. I meant the obvious:
"wut up wid dis room" kind of thing...but guess it's a terrible suggestion. I wasn't gearing towards anyone that's unable to spell spell correctly, obviously some people aren't very good at spelling, but nevermind. I had just gotten a PM from someone where the whole thing was that lazy I don't feel like typing out the whole word kind of thing and I could barely read the thing. So figured I'd make a suggestion but, nevermind. And now that I'm actually thinking about it and reading everything I'm realizing that's quite a tough thing to tackle. I apologize and I think I wrote it in a venting mood after getting that PM lol. This post has been edited by BeyondCurious on May 25 2009, 02:17 PM |

English isn't my first language too and so it is easier for me to follow the content of a thread when it is written in normal english. Like BeyondCurious says, any written slang makes it harder to understand.
Some grammar or shift mistakes shouldn't be a great problem I think. |

Well, I've been accused of being way too anal when it comes to punctuation and grammar, and yes, it IS irritating when someone "types like they talk". But, that's someone's prerogative, and they are entitled to it. It's not like we all work at the same law firm or whatever.
I figure as long as I can tell what the poster is trying to say, it's all gut! LOL p.s. yeah, just ask me to try to type in German, when all I know is Rammstein lyrics! That would be interesting....painful is probably a better word. ;) |

English is a very hard language to master especially if it is not your native language. It is mine but I am by no way a grate speller and last time I checked my spell checker does not work in here ( I wouls use it if it did) but I rarely have any problems understanding things written in basic english.
Should also remember that many words are spelled differently even amoungst the same language in different parts of the world i.e in the US we spell it color but in the UK it is often spelled colour - either is a correct spelling. I also find that not only does my computer sometimes type things differently than my fingers especially if trying to post in the chat room - my typing skill is even worse than my spelling skills - thank goodness we don't need math skills in here! One of my mentors in the private world is fond of the saying 3 + 3 = 5 ( I won't explain!) but I can be very creative! |

Well. . . . there are several reasons for the spelling. . . . . There is a technique of literary works called " writing in the vernacular". . . which may lead the reader to think they are misspellings. . . . . Then there is the late technique, EBONICS, supposedly taught in New York City schools. . . ! ! ! Another, is a Non-English speaking persons learning to write the way the word sounds to their ears.....lacking diphthong training......similar to some foreign languages. All in All, just read and Enjoy . . .   |
