Hello all, I would like to post movies of me and the wife and our movie files are rather large. AVI format. The movies are large in file size, not that long in running time. The quality is good but in order to post them and keep them in the 9meg posting size they will need to be split into quite a few files. So my question is: Is there a better or good program for reducing the file size without losing much of the quality? Compressing? Or just make the movies in a lower res.setting? I do have HSplit and have some understanding of it. Thanks in advance. Love this place. :)

slapphappy, what do you have access to software/hardware-wise at the moment? I would recommend anything that will encode the video using the H.264/MP4 codec. QuickTime player with QuickTime pro makes this pretty easy (just open the video then export as MP4), but there are a ton of cheap and easy to use software packages that will do this for you. With H.264 you will usually greatly reduce the size of the original file, particularly if you have an uncompressed AVI (10x size reduction is not uncommon with the right settings).
If you have specific questions feel free to PM me, or reply to this thread. |

Since .mp4 files can't be uploaded here without adding the extencion .mpg (.mp4.mpg) I suggest .mpg since it is much more user friendly and can even be played as stand alone movies after being split with HJSplit without joining. This post has been edited by deerhunter on Feb 4 2009, 07:52 PM |
