We do need a multiple-choice option.
I chose "lover", because that most closely describes it. Now obviously I love animals; we wouldn't be here if we didn't. And I probably love them a little more than your average Joe. But it's not the head-over-heels type of romantic fiction like the poets write about. My pets are a part of the family, part of the inner circle. I take care of them, provide them with food and shelter and exercise (not just that kind either, wise guy). If anyone were to hurt them, you bet there'd be consequences. And of course I would try to save them should anything dire ever befall them. But I guess that's where I end and total zoos begin. I don't consider what my grrls and I had "relationships". If I were to ever get married, it'd be a woman, or no one at all. Four-legged companions are good friends and great lovers, but that's where I stand. I lean more on the physical end of things than the emotional, but I can respect people who are the opposite. Good thread, though. It's good to hear insight from different points of view. Unique people, unique views. B) |

me too... SHE is my lover.
I don't like the objectifying pronoun "it" in this case. |

ErrWolf  I agree with both of you. I don't like the use of that word here either, but its excusable here I suppose. What really pisses me off is when reading some people's posts (in other threads, not this one), they talk explicitly about sex with their animal but use "it" instead of "him" or "her." "its penis" or "its pussy" really irks me too, because here the sex is so obvious. I learn a lot about members from threads like these. ^_^ .... Anyways, Can I call one I've never had sex with my lover? Because that's the way I feel about my dog. I'm in love with him. So emotionally we are there, just not physically. My girl is family. And my non-dog pets (rabbit/fish) are just pets, not really family. |

I love my 2 girl's so much that they are the only ones in my will. (Yes ... you can do that.) They are to get everything that I have, (should ... God forbid ... something happen to me) including the (paid for) house ... so that they can continue to live in familar surrondings until they should pass on. (Most of my personal possions would be sold off to keep paying the bills to keep the house running & to pay their bills too.) After they pass away ... then everything gets sold & the proceeds go to the local Humane Society to help other dog's in need. :) I'll bet you never thought of that ... now did you ? A very dear friend would take care of them in my/their house & the Law Firm that set all this up would monitor the entire situation free of charge. (I've known the Lawyer/Firm ever since I was a kid. They just love me & my continued business.) So my girl's are set for life ... that's how much I      them. :)

I no longer have a dog. We had to have her put to sleep in 200-something. She was old and had health problems related to age (she was 15).
She was a member of our family. My dog first and foremost, then the family's. And my Mum's "shadow". |

I agree 110% Missy. We enter into this......... er........ "lifestyle choice" then some of us try to de-personalise it somehow, for whatever reasons. I too wonder about the emotional commitment shown by those posters, on this thread and others. I currently have 2 dogs - one snipped and one not. The older (snipped) one has been there for me at some really low points in my life, when owning him forced me to get my ass out of bed and take him for a walk etc., when that was the last thing i wanted to do. I now realise how much I owe him, and would do anything to repay that debt. The younger (unsnipped) one I have begun to train to be a stud dog. I don't see the sex thing as being particularly relevant tho' - he depends on me just as much as the older one, and I treat them both exactly the same. Yes, I get my "kicks" more from training the young one with women, but I would never treat him any differently whether he "performs" or not. He is one of my family, and as such, when all is said and done it doesn't really matter what his sexual predilictions are. If he doesn't "measure up" I can always get another - but I will still keep the ones I already have. They ARE family, not a commodity to be sold or disposed of if they don't somehow make the grade. When you enter into any "relationship" (physical or otherwise) with dogs, the chances are that you will outlive them - I have now buried 3 female and 2 male k9s and each time it has broke my heart, but that is something that you have to accept when you let them into your life. I would do anything for them......... pay enormous amounts of money to try (sometimes in vain) to save their life........ accept poorly-paid jobs to have the flexibility to be able to get home for them during the day ....... etc...... but what I gain from them far and away outstrips any monetary considerations. Yes, they look to me for food and comfort, they are my responsibility and I will never let them down. Perhaps it's me, but I find the question "how much do you love your pet?" slightly insulting. How much do you love your husband / wife / partner? |
