Sending you positive energies Mindy. I know where you're at as I've had to put up with the same bullshit. The case o a few owners, ruining it for us all. and I say owners not companions to their animal. a difference all of us serious zoos know.
I did live in an old house with no power or water rather then give up my old lab. a sacrifice of love I would gladly do again. Wish I had an answer for you, just holding you in my prayers that you find what you seek. |

i have the same problem. a lot of apartments or houses will allow 'smaller dogs' or 'docile animals', but tell them you have a pair of shepherds and it's an immediate NO!
and what i find especially hilarious is that the first 3 breeds in the 'most dangerous breed' list are the Dachshund, Chihuahua, and jack russel terrier. so really those landlords are going after entirely the wrong breeds. 1. Dachshund 2. Chihuahua 3. Jack Russell 4. Akita 5. Australian Cattle Dog 6. Pit Bull 7. Beagle 8. English Springer Spaniel 9. Border Collie 10. German Shepard aaaand... how many of those dogs are 'smaller dogs'? You could argue six or seven of them. the world is so ignorant. it's an especially great idea to have the potential landlord meet with your dog(s), that's an excellent idea. I bet that first impression could go a lot of the way towards helping him/her consider you both as a tenants. keep looking, you will find a place for you both. |

Unfortunately we are suffering the years of irresponsible pet owners and breeders who caused animal bites that were totally unnecessary. The insurance companies got tired of settling dog bite claims, and underwriting started rating homeowner and apartment owners rates on certain breeds of dogs. Afraid there is little we can do to change it.
Best of luck. |

*look of confused horror*
German Shepherds are on the "dangerous dog" list?????? Seriously?? Wow... I didn't know that... *laughs over Dachshund and Chihuahua*  huh... well, I guess they do tend to be nippy when the owners never bother to train them, but that's still funny... I would have thought Pitt Bulls, Rotweilers, and Dobermans would have been the top three breeds, if only by way of bad press... Anyway, moparmindy, that really sucks! I hope you are able to find an understanding (and more open-minded) landlord... Best of luck!! |

you gotta get that in writing and ask to see that "list"...
depending upon jurisdiction a LL may be able to refuse you for any reason whatsoever. As a LL myself I have done a 100% consistently fabulous job of interviewing prospectives. If I were you I'd play it the opposite way and interview the other party for the right sort of folks. This may sound like a brush-off but it isn't, its about relationships. ;) btw... 60 miles RT is killing you? Damn I live in LA and that's a short RT. Depending on the situation introducing the LL to the pet may not do any good. If the LL is a manager or professional agent representing a company there are black and white rules that they are not going to be able to make exceptions on. Not saying those rules are necessarily good mind you, but they are hard boundries that if he makes exceptions for someone it would probably get him fired. If it is a privately owned property that could make some headway. Especially if can produce papers from a professional trainer and vet that will vouch for the animal. The best situation unfortunately is probably just to suck it up and settle for a suboptimal situation or take the plunge and get a mortgage. Neither may be a great option for you, so I hope something works out in your favor one way or another.

As a landlord, with many years of experiece, I will tell you why you are not allowed to bring a pet to your place! Dogs and Cats have to "mess", when they need to, they do-- -often without the knowlege or permission of the tennant. You move out, the smells often show up when warmer weather shows up, and you are GONE! I have had to re-carpet way too many places over the years, so I too have joined the NO PETS group! :w00t: himfella :devil2: |

hey chiuahuas are very dangerous (specially if you train them to attack), they cant jump to the neck to bite, so they get just a little lower (like 60 cm/2 ft), and that might be even worse than death! :P
Ok, I am a landlord (sorry, here in Mexico and already renting), I knwo what this guys might feel, there are people that never sees the home as theirs to take care of (drilling straight trough containment/structural walls, tearing expensive fixtures to get something done, etcetera), which makes us pretty jumpy, that leads to look for the "less troublesome" stereotype of a renter (that means best singles, two legged couples with no kids and definitely no "pets"), the exeptions might come when you know the person you are renting to and they get to know you for a time before you start renting, that way they might do an exeption (which you would have to honor by being an excellent renter, to the point they could set their watches with your rent payment) I really wish you luck with your home issues. |

Just explain to the landlord that this is not a "pet" but a companion....like a spouse. They'll understand

My curent residence is in an apartmnt block that only allows service dogs, ie, seeing eye or in the case of a gentleman upstairs, who has epilepsy. They inturn must file a request with the rental company. I'm sure if I introduced a dog as my companion or wife... "she" better be able to cook, sew, and do laundry. I know just telling them she is a companion will not be enough.

I am very fortunate to have a great relationship with my landlord (my flat is on his property). He's happy with me as a tenant and has told me I am welcome to stay here indefinately.
He's also aggreeable to me having a companion dog, providing of course I observe my usual responsibilities as a dog owner on his property. I've been here approx. 4 yrs now and have no desire to move. However, much as I want to share my life with a loving canine companion, I realise that nothing in this life is 'permanent' and sooner or later, I may have to leave...especially as I'm about to re-marry and this place was only built for one! I would be very hard pressed to find another understanding landlord such as he, so although I've been tempted several times, I cannot put myself in a position of being forced to part with my dog simply for the sake of finding alternative accomodation. So...sadly a doggie is out of the question for me. :( On the subject of 'dangerous' dogs, The list described here in an earlier post gave me a bit of a giggle so I did a Google on it and found a few unexpected results. The breeds included in the lists I found were nothing like the one described and there were some differences, depending on the country/location of the sources. 3 of the four lists I saw were identical and are stated as being (Quote):- 1. Pitbull 2. Rottweiler (I've had 3 of these over the years) 3. German Shepherd 4. Huskie 5. Alaskan Malamute  6. Doberman 7. Chow Chow 8. Presa Canario 9. Boxer :o 10. Dalmation  The 4th listed only 9 breeds which were (Quote):- 1. Staffie 2. Aust. Cattle dog 3. Rottwelier 4. German Shepherd 5. Pitbull 6. Kelpie 7. Bullmastiff 8. Labrador :o (C'mon!!!) 9. Aust. Terrier  (ankle biter) However, regardless of the source, it should be remembered that ALL dogs are potentially 'dangerous' irrespective of breed or size if not basically trained, well 'socialized' from a puppy and cared for responsibly as part of a family (pack). fester |

Oh and btw...I meant to edit my previous post (above), but overshot the timing limit.
I doubt very much that this is the right place to post this thread. I can see nothing'zoophilia' based here. I'd suggest you ask a Mod to move it to a more appropriate section for you. ;) |

There is a growing amount of irresponsible pet owners who also play a part in this situation. I think, this is a problem of the community in general..lack of care ..you can see this with pets, children and other stuff. I often got the answer " I rented it so I have the right to wear things out". So I can understand some of the landlords reactions.
