There are programs that will download themselves on to your computer and pretend to be your anti-virus, but are actually a virus themselves.
I was reading this thread Bilara and wondered about her too, so I searched "bilara" on Google. I clicked the first result "bilara.com" but then it redirected to another site. It looked like youtube and had "porntube" in the corner. All the "videos" were of girls with dogs, and I, curiously foolish, clicked on one. It decided to then download something on to my computer- without my permission. The file turned out to be one of those rogue antivirus programs. The address was NOT porntube.com, instead it was something like porntubev20.com. I think I've removed it. That computer is a POS anyway due to power issues, but I thought it was something I should warn others about. Be careful. Another thing, that computer does have antivirus protection, however, for some reason it was not starting up with the computer! So always make sure your antivirus program is on and working! And always be aware of what site you are on while using the internet. Also, these programs will make you think your computer is filled with hundreds of viruses and bugs and trick you into purchasing a fake AV program. :o |

Thanks for the heads up missy, I feel your pain :( ..
ATF-cleaner http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?a...ads&showfile=21 Click on this link and read then scrool down to the d/l prompt and d/l to your desktop open the tool and tick the box beside "select all" then click "remove selected" then exit.. Takes about 10secconds to d/l and run. This will allow your virus scan to complete much faster. Before running any removal tool always create a restore point that you can remember. Now d/l and run this great new tool (1.62mb) Free trial. http://www.brothersoft.com/download-malwar...ware-71406.html Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (for Windows 2000, XP, Vista ONLY) - Download Free Version (freeware) MBAM has been very effective at helping remove some of the more difficult infections. Double-click mbam-setup exe and follow the prompts to install the program. At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following: Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Then click Finish. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When completed, a log will open in Notepad. The rogue application should now be gone. --------------------------------------------------------- Now to see if anything was missed run a "Panda Active Scan" it's also free. If MBAM missed anything Panda will find it. http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/ This post has been edited by deerhunter on Jul 21 2008, 06:54 AM |

Thanks deerhunter. You're awesome!
I think it is gone, but I'm going to be super careful now. JP was working on it and he said after being on that machine awhile it did not come back so I think it is gone. I haven't messed with that computer since that time (last night). I'm on another computer now. I certainly don't want any malware on this one. |

Useing the procidure I reccomend will result in no loss of files except the corrupt one.
Hey if it's possible you can just do a system restore to an earlier date. My problem was that my system restore was attacked and lost all restore points. |

:( See, I think that's what happened here. First thing I thought to do was a system restore, but when I went to the system restore screen, there were no restore points available. That's odd, considering when you install a new program it makes a restore point. JP downloaded the Spore demo on this computer, and then I did too on the other one. He has a restore point for that day so I should have at least had that, but no. Nothing. Not even from the day I reinstalled windows. Or from the many programs I installed on it.
That sucks. :( |

Thanks! A warning to be super careful--if it can happen to savvy people like you, it can surely get the rest of us......
Fortunately, some odd claims notwithstanding, THIS site seems to be super secure. I only go here and youtube, having learned my lesson with a couple of close calls in the past. |

yeah. It is. JP told me after that happened, that I should just stay on beastforum because it is secure. So besides email and the usual stuff, I won't be on any other website today.

Missy there are also rogue java updates out there so if you get a propmt that a Java update is avaliable do not click on it..
The best way to update Javea is to completelly remove all related files from your computer and then d/l the latest version. |

One should always be careful when surfing in unknown territory, as there are many sites which are nothing but redirects to a supposed virus detection and supposedly removal program that demands you pay for it to remove the supposed viruses that it tells you that you now have in your PC. Other sneak into your system through a corrupt e-mail, A while back I got caught with a backdoor trojan that disabled Norton and no amount of screening could locate the offending program, so I had to give that dreaded command format c: and loose everything on the HD.

Yeah, it is. I do not understand why people get their jollies from ruining other people's computer. I guess its because they can and have the know-how, but really, they should find another hobby! :( If they know how to make bad programs, surely they could also make sincerely good programs. Why do people use their talents to do bad things?! :crying: |
