Use AVG, it picks up on virus's instantly. Every virus i have ever got was found in minutes.

Its a sad time we live in when people just do it for fun.

I agree that AVG is a great av tool but it doesn't catch everything..

I have been using it for about 2 years now and never had a problem until June 28 after scanning a downloaded file with AVG and getting an all clear. Upon opening the file AVG went crazy healing and quarantining Trojan horses.

I ran MBAM (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) and found 28 infected files which it removed and restored my machine back to normal with a couple of tweaks by me.

I've used AVG for a long time and find it quite good. I also use ATF Cleaner which is great.

Something went drastically wrong somewhere a few days ago and as soon as I started up the PC and hit any key ..... everything froze. Thankfully a system restore worked eventually without me having to do a system reset and putting everything back to factory settings ..... *cringes at the thought*. Luckily it would allow me to restore it back to July 5th so no real harm done .... other than hours and hours spent trying to find the offending programme which must have been one I had downloaded the previous night.

I tried the Panda Active Scan deer suggested but at least 12 hours later it was still running and showing only 81 per cent complete ? At that stage it reckoned it had checked 3 million files (impossible in my opinion as my PC is about 5 years old now and a small memory by new PC standards). Strangely though from periodic checks to see if it was finished throughout the day ..... I noticed it seemed to be checking the same files over and over again ..... so I stopped it and decided enough was enough!

Anyone else have that problem with the Panda Active Scan ?

Not me.. It does state that it could take upwards of 1hr depending on the amount of files..

Maybe you should run MBAM and see if AVG missed anything, I know it did on mine. Only took MBAM under 5min to do a quick scan on my machine.

True but 12 hours and still running seemed excessive using braodband

The MBAM however did work prefectly and found a lot of stuff AVG missed so thanks for that deer ;)

I'm glad it worked out for ya..

Don't know how up to date things are on your machine but if it's like mine was maybe you need to get rid of your java and replace it with the latest version 6 update 7..
Mine was version 6 update 3 and very vanurable to infections.

This is the instructions I got from geekstogo. Please read and follow all instructions carefully..

Heres the link for download-> http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp There are several versions ther so be sure to only select Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7
QUOTE
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and save it to your desktop.
Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7...allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p Icon to install the newest version.

Thanks for the heads up missy, I feel your pain :( ..
ATF-cleaner http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?a...ads&showfile=21
Click on this link and read then scrool down to the d/l prompt and d/l to your desktop open the tool and tick the box beside "select all" then click "remove selected" then exit.. Takes about 10secconds to d/l and run. This will allow your virus scan to complete much faster.

Before running any removal tool always create a restore point that you can remember.
Now d/l and run this great new tool (1.62mb) Free trial.
http://www.brothersoft.com/download-malwar...ware-71406.html

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (for Windows 2000, XP, Vista ONLY) - Download Free Version (freeware)
MBAM has been very effective at helping remove some of the more difficult infections.

Double-click mbam-setup exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:

Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. The rogue application should now be gone.
---------------------------------------------------------
Now to see if anything was missed run a "Panda Active Scan" it's also free. If MBAM missed anything Panda will find it.

hey deerhunter i was gonna make a post about this but i decided to just save space and ask here.
what do u know about backing up files/restore, and restore point?
are they the same thing?
im not computer stupid but this stuff gets confusing.

i want to back up my files but im not 100% sure i know what im doing.

i already had my computer crash because of a storm. so i had to get a new hard drive and i couldn't get any of my files back from the original.

now that i don't have my webroot anti-virus anymore because i deleted it on accident and lost the code to reinstall it like a jackass. i want to either back up my files or make a restore point in case i catch a virus. how exactly do i do that?

one last question before i let the pro look over my problems again about backing up files.
on the HDD menu it says (recovery) and it is almost full. before i tried to back up files it was more than half full. then it said it was full. what will happen if i delete EVERYTHING on it to make room to make a new back up file?

sorry if i asked some of the same questions in different forms, but like i said dealing with the hard drive and recovery business is confusing to me, and is something i dont want to do and F**k up doing.

How to do a restore point:
start menu > accessories > system tools > System restore

when you create a restore point, it saves everything on your computer. If something happens, you can go back to the date you want and everything will be just like it was on that date. This means anything you have downloaded, created or installed since that day will be gone. Any files you have edited will be the same as they were on that day.

The problem with this is, after I got that malware program, it deleted all my restore points. This is why it is a good idea to back up your stuff elsewhere. If you have an external hard drive, you can copy files you don't want to lose onto it. If you don't have one, it is a good investment. :)

Deerhunter can explain anything else, or go into more detail, but that's what I know.

I'm sorry but I know nothing about *vista*

Maybe you can find system restore by looking in Admanistrative options or performance and maintenance.. Failing that try doing a system search, Look in all files and folders key word "System Restore"

With XP there is an option on system restore main page to create new, Just give it a name/number and save.

If you feel that you have an infection the MBAM tool mentioned above is designed for XP and Vista.. and no it doesn't reset your restore points uless maybe if you have a restore point thats infected.. Not sure about that part.

If what you read here doesn't help these guys a "geekstogo.com" definatelly can resolve your problem. It's a free forum just like Bf and the people there are very helpful.

Good luck, deer

damn i knew i shouldn't have mentioned vista.
well i don't think its much different from the regular versions.

ok lets try this.
1. im in control panel
2. it says backup and restore center
3. ohhhhhh i think i just found it :D

i just looked at the task bar and saw
1. repair windows with system restore.

2. create a restore point or change settings.

well i got thru the hard part now here is the harder part.

ok...i think i did it.
well only a time and a mistake i wanna undo will tell.

one last time to pester u deer.
what about my question about the HDD recovery.
what would happen if i erase stuff from there to make room.
should i even worry about it?

missy there is on way MBAM (maiwarebites) would have deleted your restore points.
The reason I suggested creating a restore point is in case there is no others there and for the possibility that a file would be deleted by MBAM that would cause your system to not operate properly.. Sure there would be a restore poing for todays date there already but restore points are by the clock so creating a new one would wipe out the one set earlier today.

I'm afraid that you must have had one of the same trojans that I did which deleted all restore points. My clean restore point was created on the 18th and I have ran MBAM every day since and all restore dates are still there back to the 18th..

Next: If you do a system restore to an earlier date it does not effect any content you have downloaded since then other than software that would alter/change your OS.. For example if after the 18th I download a new virus protection system and install it, That alone will set a new restore point and will be wiped out if I do a system restore to the 18th but will not alter/dispose of any pic or movie files added after the 18.. System Restore means just what it says, It restores your system and only your system.

Backup's are good and I backup my personal and movie content by copying them to a secondary internal harddrive in case my primary drive fails mechanically..

sry I didn't cover that earlier, But like I say, I know nothing about vista.

Crap I have never even used recovery on my XP LOL.

The guys at geekstogo showed me how to d/l a recovery console on my machine on the 18th but I have no idea how to use it "yet". Hopefully I never have to.

As long as you know how to do a system restore I think that having to do a recovery wouldn't be likely unless you couldn't get your system to boot up at all.

My best advice at this time would be for you to visit geekstogo and have a look around then create an account and post your questions in the proper subforam.

Yo might even find the answer without posting. You can read all topics without registering but must register to reply or create topic's..
