I don't aim to offend anyone, but I'm gonna go on a mini-rant here ... I hate it when people get rid of animals because they're having a baby, or they're moving, or any of the other life occurances that people use as a reason to ditch a pet. That cute little puppy will become a 10+ year commitment, and more folks should consider that. I hope the dog will soon find a forever home and that your friend sticks to pet rocks from now on.

I would agree that as a whole Americans tend to always take the easy, convenient way out instead of sticking with a commitment like a pet or being married. We as a whole are to self absorbed to see some of the decisions we make really, really hurt those around us. I think probably 90% of pet "divorces" are because of a lack of intelligent decision making or narscissim. It would be "inconvenient" to keep him in a new living situation or "too expensive". That said there is the other 10% where situations come up that no one could have anticipated. Stuff like an unanticpated child coming into the family. Many breeds do not deal well with no longer being the focus of their "parents" and can develop bad behavior. And I know I wouldn't want the possibility of a tragedy because I failed to make a decision. What if someone in the reserves or national guard is unexpectedly called up and does not have a partner to care for a pet? Stuff like this is in the minority, but it does happen. All told it is always sad whenever a pet has to be put in a pound or put to sleep due to a human's bad decisions. We just have to do what we can to rescue as many as possible B) |

Personally, it makes me angry when I hear such things. People should always think if there would be any problem before getting an animal..and not "throw it away" if something happens and it gets inconvenient.

    exactly what I would have said. ^_^ This is also what makes fish good pets. A betta is easy to take care of in any situation and only lives a few years. Fish are awesome, but require more care than pet rocks. |

Unfortunately, giving away your pet is what medical doctors very often suggest during pregnancy. I don't know where the myth came from, but I cannot see why a pet should be a problem.
People listening to these doctors should also review from whom they take advice. Prank |

Actually there is a beliefe now forming that the high incidence of asthma in children and young adults in the last couple of decades has to due with the lack of exposure to normal environmental stresses. This includes exposure to animals and their dander etc. In short having a pet while raising children may be indeed very beneficial in the long run to help maintain a child's immunological health, especially in highly urban environments.

Could't agree more. Strikes me some owners never think things through. I love dogs but when my last boy died I did't replace him. Not because I did't want to, but because my circumstances changed and my job took me away from home alot. Much as I loved and missed having a companion, it just was'nt fair to get another if I could't be there for him. Recently circumstances have changed so a new doggie is now back on the agenda as I can fit my work commitments round him. As for giving your dog away during pregnancy, hell no, thats just a plain waste of opportunity ;) |

yeah! this is true. Its very unfortunate because when these kids are finally exposed to pets/animals they have a higher chance of allergies.
 My boyfriend has this fantasy of me being done by a dog while pregnant and/or lactating...so when that time comes, my dog is staying with me. ;) :P  My children are going to grow up around dogs right from the start. No doubt about it. ^_^ |

Ditto to what ainsley has said. Pet to some people are just something to throw away when the novelty wears off.

I completely agree with everyone. I had a client recently who got his sister and her husband a puppy as a gift [ per their request ] and a few months later she got pregnate and got rid of the dog! He wasn't even with them for more than 6 months! He was outraged, considering they gave it up without even telling him / asking if he wanted the dog. I can't believe how people can just give their animals away like that, so sad!

So aparently everyone here hates the horse industry, eh? I've sold several horses, bought several, and bought some for the sole intention of making a profit. Just because someone is reorganizing their lives doesn't mean their pets are worthless. Just because some people love their pets intimately doesn't make those of us who value human relationship bad people. Some times a pet has to find a new home when things change dramatically in their owner's lives. Does not make them bad people!

That seems a little harsh. It's very true that people need to realize that a pet is a very large commitment, and not just something to pick up on a whim. That being said, you can't always judge somebody based on what they do. For many people situations arise where they judge don't have the time/financial/etc. commitment to take care of the animal. The fact is that sometimes it is in the pets best interest. Would you rather they be ignored or recieve poor care than go to someone willing to take them? |

PonyStud08, I don't have anything against the horse industry. Working animals aren't in the same category as "family pet" to me.
Mr666, you do have a point. Obviously everyone would prefer the pet to go to a better home than face a life of neglect. But, I don't think I am being too harsh. It really bothers me that people today can so easily give up on these animals that depend on and have become attached to them. This behavior is often repeated throughout a person's life.
