I know a couple who had a beautiful boxer for several years after they were married. The boxer was a loyal and protective friend to them. They loved him dearly, and he was a part of the family. They eventually decided to start a family, and shortly after the birth of their first child, the boxer began to show signs of jealousy, and would exhibit behavior that they found threatening to their newborn child, including growling when the child had to be fed, baring his teeth, and pacing.

For the safetly of the child, they had to give their beloved animal away.

Sometimes, people have to do what's best for their personal situation, and I don't think any of us have a right to judge.

So horses can't be loved and treated as pets? My pony follows me around, rides in the truck, and goes into houses... how is he any different from a beloved family pet? He's still livestock though, and is treated as such... I don't see how pets and livestock are so different. If it came down to him getting neglected because I couldn't care for him (not that I wouldn't care for him, saying if I COULDN'T care for him), he'd have to go too. I hope to god that that never happens, but it could. That absolutely does not mean he's not loved and cared for just as much as any of the dogs owned by zoos or you :)

Oh my God ... do we really need to split hairs and argue every single possible cirumstance?

Neece12, of course there are plenty of totally valid reasons for having to give your pet up. Nobody would blame someone for doing what your friends had to do.

Ponystud08, the only horses I've been around have been actual working horses, not horses small enough to ride in trucks or go inside houses. I never said they can't be loved or treated as pets, I simply said that (from the exposure I've had to them) horses aren't like pets to me, as my dogs are.

When blanket statements are made, yes, different situations need to be described to show people that you aren't a bad person for having to make a difficult decision.

To go another direction with this (since some cannot seem to respect others' input):
:( :( :(

Please inform your friend that there ARE rescue [SPAM] out there that are breed-specific, and yes, there is at least one out there for boxers. Your friend can rest assured that the dog should have a good home, as most rescue [SPAM] have a rigorous screening process for potential adopters. And most [SPAM] can be found online.

Yes, I agree it is a sad situation when an expectant couple feel they have to oust the dog to make way for baby, but I would want to hear ALL the facts and circumstances before I just go and pass judgement on someone. That, in my NOT SO humble opinion, is a large part of why the world's such a mess: few people make the effort anymore to understand another's POV (walk a mile in their shoes).
But that's a rant for another thread.

Cheers! And I hope Turbo gets the loving, caring home every dog needs.

I'm sure that there are some circumstances when getting rid of a pet is required. But 90% of the time it is not, shame on people who take that route. And when the time does come and you do have to get rid of a pet, it is your responsibility to make sure you find a good place for it to go.

My point, madam, was to STOP JUDGING PEOPLE who do things differently than you would. You don't know the circumstances of the couple in the original post any more than you know anyone else's personal situation. Blanket statements are simply unfair. It's like saying "all people who practice bestiality suffer from social retardation and can't interact with other humans, so they turn to animals." How fair is that?

i agree with Neece 100% this thread wasnt started for a rant session ....
as for horses being a working animal , i have 3 horses only 2 of them i ride the other is to small to ride there for not a working animal but they are all loved the same , i do my damndest to make sure their needs are met, they know that they are loved and return the affection that they are given, even though you might debate that a horse is incapable , your opinion wold be wrong, however thats another thread. just as your are wrong to critisize others for things that they may have to do , due to circumstances beyond their control. ok iv said my peace.

without knowing the situation, it is impossible to judge correctly.

However it is possible to have both a baby and a dog. Just depends on the dog.
In Neece's friend's situation, yes, the dog had to go since they couldn't get him to behave properly and felt their baby was at risk. Baby should always comes first.

Rescue organizations are good places to find a new home for your purebred doggie.

Don't forget either that this person might have DONE what everyone is saying and found it a very good home to replace the one it lost.
