Companion

Kai (pronounced like the sky, except no s) had been traveling alone for five days after the death of her grandfather. He had been ill for a while and could not travel. The tribe needed to migrate with the herds to survive and they waited as long as they could. They approached her and grandfather about the dilemma and he knew for the better that the tribe must go with out him and so it was decided. He was Kai’s only family and she refused to leave him alone despite his and the elder’s protests. Grandfather walked with the spirits after the tenth night. Once she honored him she trailed after the tribe as quickly as possible.
It was close to noon on the sixth day when she saw buzzards circling ahead. She proceeded with caution as the smell of death spread swarmed around her. Ahead she saw an overturned wagon and the three bodies two were pale faces, a man and women. The other body was what caused her to fear, it was a dead Pawnee warrior. She looked around to make sure none were around not that it would have mattered she thought, for if there were any she would already be dead. They were stripped of everything valuable as she searched the wagon and bodies; even the Pawnee warrior was stripped of his possessions. She looked at the dead warrior with disgust knowing of the savagery of the Pawnee who would rather leave their dead discarded then honor them properly. She was startled upon hearing a noise behind her and turned to see a yellow dog.
With his head down low and eyes looking up he reminded her of a scared child and she bent low as she approached this sad looking creature. He must have been with the pale faces she thought as he allowed her to run her hand along his neck and back. She examined him for injuries and found only minor cuts and a slight limp with his rear leg. He had some blood around his mouth and she suspected it wasn’t his own. She didn’t know if the Pawnee raiding party would be back anytime soon and she didn’t care to find out. She got her stuff together and looked at the dog and in a soft voice she said, “ Come on then, there is a river not far from here.” and as they walked away she smiled down at the dog with the comfort of now having a companion on her long and lonely journey.
They arrived at the river shortly before dark Kai set to work to get a fire started. Once there was a fire she sat down and got out some dried meat and fruits and started to eat. Her new companion sat obediently next to her while she ate wagging his tail and looking at her anxiously. “What is the matter with me, you must eat too.” , as she tossed him a large piece of meat with a smile on her face and she watched him eat.” I will call you Heove (pronounced he-o-v) since that is your color my friend and she patted him on the head. Kai looked at what she had for their rations and with concern realized that she did not have enough food to last her more then a week and she was not certain how long it would be before she found her tribe. Kai looked at her companion knowing they would have to stay here a while to find enough food to keep them going in their pursuit to find the tribe. Kai laid her head down with her companion next to her and fell into a deep sleep.
Over the next several days Kai worked hard at building cages to trap fish, set snares for rabbits and forage for berries and roots, all the while Heove stayed at her side keeping his new mistress company. Late one day Kai was checking the cages to trap fish in the river when Heove came running in pursuit of a pheasant, which flew over Kai. Jumping into the water out past his mistress in river Heove splashed Kai in his one track thought of getting the fowl.” Eeeee!” screeched Kai, as the cold water was drenching her. Kai swished through the water to shore, which caught Heove’s attention from the pheasant towards his mistress.
Kai stood on the shore dripping wet and stared down at Heove when he arrived next to her wagging his tail and panting from his little chase and completely oblivious to Kai’s anger. “ You miserable dog! ”, Kai yelled. “ Look at me. I’m working to feed us and you are playing and making it impossible for me to work! ” Heove knew he was being scolded and bowed his head expecting to be hit like his previous owner. Right in the middle of his mistresses yelling she stopped and startled him by abruptly hugging him around the neck and sobbing uncontrollably with her face buried in his neck.
After some time Kai lifted her head and said, “ I’m sorry Heove. You are my companion. My only friend because my tribe is so far away and moving further ever day.” Kai went over by the stream to wash her face from the dog hair that stuck to her face from her tears. “ I cannot work all wet can I Heove”, said Kai as she looked towards him and started to peal off her soaked garments. She laid the clothes out on a boulder for the sun to dry. Now that she was nude Kai went over to a soft grassy area and sat down. “ I could use a little rest. Come lay next to me Heove. I will not scold you any more.” Kai said with a smile. After Heove lay next to her she joined him and placed her arm over his body and fell asleep.
During her slumber Kai was having nightmares of her tribe leaving her behind and was restless in her sleep. Heove raised his head sensing his mistress’s distress and licked her along her neck to comfort her.
