Well, there are a few things that one could get sick from by doing this. The first, of course, is bacteria. The k-9 colon, much like our own is teaming with bacteria, anyone ever heard of e. coli. Making she your dog has voided himself well and his hole is nice and clean can greatly reduce this risk, but it will always be present. The other thing that can cause problems is worms (yes, we can get them too). Worms like hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms reproduce by fecal-oral routes. The eggs are expelled out the ass, enter the mouth somehow, and eventually turn into adult worms in the gut who breed and lays eggs, thus starting the cycle over again. I certainly would NOT recommend rimming a stray or unfamiliar dog, as you would have no idea as to his worm status. For your own dog, however, if you have gotten him checked up regularly at the vet's office and have him on monthly heartworm preventatives, you have a greatly reduced chance of picking up worms.
