Strange question I know, but some friends of mine have a dog that seems to have developed a sense of humor. The best example I can give is that when they visit their friends and take their dog with them he will play what looks like a practical joke on the friends dog. He will wait until the friends dog is not looking and will remove one of the toys and hide it out in the garden. When the other dog realizes that one of his toys is missing he goes looking for it, at which point another of the toys is taken and hidden. It's very funny to watch and the owners are adamant that they have not taught or encouraged this behavior.
Is this a sense of humor based on teasing or just plain old play?

Yes, most certainly...I've seen many instances where dogs will play tricks on each other or on other people.

Most definitely.

One slipper taken and hidden; hiding behind a bush; growling and pouncing on me and then licking me uncontrollably; dropping things into my bath, etc, etc.

Oh yes, they do have a sense of humour!

Oh yes, animals have such a sense of humor! My cats will hide in the rafters of the barn and jump down on me and my pony when we're not paying attention..

For sure. I was at a Fred Meyers store a while back and saw one having his fun.
I would have been his next victim if I had not seen it happen to someone else.
Imagine a Black Lab in the bed of a black truck. He's hunkered down so all you might see is the top of his head. As a person walks beside the truck, He jumps up and lets out a mighty WOOF.
The poor victim freaks out! The dog hunkers down again ( with a big grin on his face ) and waits for the next sucker to walk by.

absolutely they do, my dane thinks its funny to just get caught off gaurd, suprised then bound around like a big goof for a while, his favorit is when im in the ppol and explode out of the water right in front of him and grab him, then take off bounding.

My cattle loves our one cat, but then theres the cat that dosent like any one or anything, so he likes to just lay by her as she growls at him, he knows hes bugging her and will just lay there to annoy her.

Yes indeed they do, I rember working at a shelter and a stunning shepherd named Indy HATED small children & animals. One day I was cleaning the cat's area out and could see a small child going about outting his fingers in the bars etc well she must have heard because she went into the inside part of her kennel and hid. The kid soon came around to her kennel and as usual finegrs in bars calling the dog's name, I can tell you now I have never seen anything so funny she shot right out at the small child barking and snarling loudley, The poor kid fell back crying his little heart out and she trotted around her pen as though she was proud for herself.
