This is a story of a dragon and a man. ((M / M)) There are more chapters coming, but i like to leave you on the edge of your seats in anticipation.

I want to forwardly thank two people who have helped me with the story
;) 1- animalurge = for helping me with some of the character names and plots
^_^ 2- dragonic49 = for giving me ideas when i needed them
these two have given me the spark to continue with the story in my spare time.

This is my first attempt at a m/m story. It's first few chapters are a little slow and drawn out, so bear with me, im still going at it though.
And so, we begin our Tale.....

Chapter One - Of Necklaces and Collars

The table before him was covered in trinkets and many objects that captured his gaze. Tent flaps and flags rustled in the strong spring breeze, making the occasional snap. The distant castle was towering above all else and there were many men and women funneling in and out to trade, buy, and sell their items at the yearly festival. Reaching manhood of 18 years old only a fortnight ago, he was finally allowed to join the throng of people. He arrived there some time earlier with his father and younger brother. His bow was on his back with a large, larger than most soldiers, quiver of arrows, his hunting knife strapped firmly to his ankle, and a pouch with half of his earnings from working for the last several years with his father on the farm firmly secured to his hip. The rest of his money was securely hidden where no one, not even his father, could find it.

Returning his attention to the table, he glanced sideways to his brother. Although people looked down upon younger people attending the festival, their father had talked with a high noble, insisting that his brother be allowed to see it. His brother was eyeing many of the choices and finally rested on one in particular. “So brother,” ruffling Johns’ sandy blonde hair, “find what you want?” Fixing his hair, John nodded and pointed. It was wrought in what appeared to be fine silver; gold chain with a clasp at one end. But what held his gaze the most, was the charm that hung from it. A Dragon. On all fours with spread wings, looked back up at him with a deep ruby diamond. Turning to his little brother, he asked, “Are you sure this is what you want?” he said slowly. Nodding vigorously, John looked up with excitement in his blue eyes. “Yes! Evan, can you get it for me?” John asked hesitantly. “Let me see how much money you have.” Evan answered. Handing Evan his money pouch, John continued to stare at the necklace. Handling Johns’ money and looking back at the price, Evan let out a sigh. The necklace price was marked as a hundred fins. The kings and queens had thousands to millions of fins in treasure and gold. Piling the money back into Johns purse, Evan handed it back to him and called out to the storekeeper. “Sir? We’re ready.” A flap was thrust aside and a man well into his later years stepped out. Evan had to suppress the gasp in a cough. Evan knew for his age of 18 that he was tall at 6 and a half feet. But this elderly man was taller than he was.

Broad chested, the storekeeper put out his hand to shake Evans with a steel-like grip. “Good sir, name is Joeb. Pleasure to meet you.” he said roughly. “My name is Evan and this is my younger brother John.” Evan said, introducing themselves. At only 5 foot tall and being 16 years old, John stared up at Joeb with awe on his face. “Good to meet you as well John,” shaking his hand gently, “so, what object has your fancy?” Joeb said with a smile. As John pointed to it, Joebs gaze softened slightly. “Ah,” he said, “you have chosen a necklace of fine craftsmanship.” Picking it up and handing it to John with care, he whispered only to them. “That necklace has much history, and most likely, a future.” Leaning back with a light smile, Joeb awaited for payment. Evan reached into his pouch and handed out the money to Joeb, to John’s obvious surprise.

Turning and seeing Johns look, Evan laughed. “Consider it a late birthday gift.” Wrapping his arms around Evan, John muffled his thanks. Letting go of his brother, John turned and spotted something and took off for a minute. Joeb took this opportunity and he invited Evan into a private discussion about the necklace and its origin. Handing Evan a book, Joeb warned him about what lay inside. Thanking him and turning to go, Evan was trapped in another one of his brothers’ hugs. “Here!” John said breathlessly, “it’s for getting me the necklace!” Taking the wrapped object gently in his hands, Evan smiled down at his brother. “You didn’t have to do this John,” he said slowly, “I got it for you for not getting you anything on your birthday.” Shaking his head, John just smiled. Grinning back at his brother, Evan opened up the package. Lying in the bottom of it was a tightly wrapped collar with the most beautiful design in it.

The collar was roughly two inches wide. There was gold weaving along the edges and then it curled in on itself beneath the charm. And the charm, gold as well, matched Johns’ necklace charm but instead of a ruby diamond like Johns, Evans was an emerald. Lifting it slowly up and out of its wrappings embrace, Evan slid it around his neck and felt the clasp in the back smoothly shut. It wasn’t tight or loose. Just the perfect fit. “Thanks John. You didn’t have to get this! I love it.” Smiling broadly, John nodded and then walked along more tables and shops. Buying a few more items and some food, they rested under the larger Bellfont trees that scattered the region. Huge bases and a large cover of shade. After finishing their food, Evan looked up through the branches. The sun was beginning to make its way to the horizon. “We better go and meet dad by the stables.” Evan said to John. Making their way along the castles inner walls, they found the stables unusually full but not crowed. Spotting their father by the cart they had hauled out, they strode over and was met by a rough voice. “Well boys? Did you have fun?” their dad questioned happily.

Spending the next hour saddling and cleaning the horses, Evan and John retold what they had done for the day. “I’m glad you both enjoyed it. Evan? What’s that around your neck?” spotting it, his father gazed at it lightly. Lifting his chin higher, Evan flashed the collar at his father. “John got it for me. For getting him a present for his birthday I missed.” Nodding to John, Evan said, “Well, show him.” Fishing out the charm along with the rest of the necklace, John showed his father what it was. “Hmmm,” their father said, eyeing both of the jewelry items equally. “Seems like they both might have been made by the same craftsman.” Looking at each other, Evan and John both shrugged. Hopping up onto their horses, their father got onto the cart and nodded. “Well we better get going. You’re mom wants us back soon. Hopefully we’ll make it back for her cooking.” Laughing together they steered their horses out of the stables and out to the gate.

Enjoy ;)

Chapter Two - The Book and Flames

Arriving home as the sun reached the horizon, they unloaded the supplies, let the horses loose in the pasture, and entered the warm interior of the house. “How are my boys?” Evans and John’s mother called down from the second floor. “Fine mother.” they both answered in tandem. After washing up, they all sat down at the table, had their nightly dinner’s prayer, and dove into their food. “Evan? That’s quite an interesting collar. Where’d you get it?” Toughing it, he had forgotten it was even there. “John bought it for me.” He said to his mother. Nodding to his brother, “Right after I got him…John?” Setting down his fork, John fished out the necklace and showed it to their mother. She looked between her sons. “You two should treasure those. They are princely gifts.” She smiled.

After bathing, Evan laid down on his bed in his separate room of the house. Reaching into his sack, he withdrew the book Joeb had given him. Pealing the cover back, Evan was struck with awe. There were pictures, intricate writing, spells, everything that was considered magical was displayed in every which way in the pages before him. There were spots where the necklace and collar were involved in the readings. Both were created and separated at one point in the past. He read on into the night, unable to stop. Line for line burned into his memory.

For a few months after that night, Evan would spend the nights reading and practicing spells. His brother noticed Evans change in attitude and decided to ask him while they were cutting the hay in the approaching autumn air. “Evan?” cut cut cut. “I have to ask you something.” Stopping his cutting, Evan turned to his younger brother. “Yes? What is it John.” Wiping the sweat from his face, John looked up at his brother. “Are you doing alright? I mean, you’ve been acting strange recently.” Staring down at his brother, Evan muttered, “Everything’s fine. Why wouldn’t it?” Giving Evan a look, John continued to push the issue. “Well you look different. You’re also pushing harder to get all of the chores done during the day. You just seem different to me that’s all.” Evans temper flared suddenly, but he remained calm enough to say, “Thanks for worrying John, but I’m fine.” Evan returned to cutting at the hay. John watch his brother for a moment before returning to work.

Lying in bed like every night before, Evan’s eyes played over a spell to manipulate water. Fixing the words in his mind he uttered them at his basing of wash water. The spell took him half of a minute to complete. When he finished, nothing happened. He looked back at the page and gasped. He had mixed the water spell with a spell that could kill anyone around him up to a hundred paces. “Oh my God! What have I done?” he cried out. Rushing to his parents’ room, he entered with a lamp, and dropped it. The glass shattered and ignited the oil within. From the burning floor, the light played into the room. Evans eyes stared into his mothers cold and glassy ones. His fathers just over hers. The flames and heat became too great for him to stay. Backing away with tears in his eyes, he ran to his room. Grabbing clothes, books, his money, and tossed it all into a pack.

Grabbing his bow and arrow pack, he moved quickly, blinded by tears. Kicking his brothers’ door down and running to his bed, Evan rolled John over. John’s eyes blazed back into Evans with a cold gaze. Crying freely now, Evan grabbed the necklace and looked back. Finally leaving the room he moved into the kitchen and packed another pack with food and drink pouches. Putting his bow and arrows across his back and strapping his sword on his waist, Evan ran out of the burning house with his two packs. Bolting into the barn, he grabbed his saddle and tossed it onto his horses’ back. Jadel nickered and Evan maneuvered him out of the barn. Looking at the collapsing house, Evan muttered a prayer, and moved into the night, crying out to himself.

Chapter Three - A New Journey and A New Friend

A year passes.

Now just over the age of nineteen, Evan had spent the last year on the move. His body had undergone an amazing transformation. His height finally maxed out at just over seven feet tall. His already broad chest was ripped with sharp muscles, along with his whole body was cut and lean. He moved what seemed like liquid grace. Although people stared at his towering figure, his face is what drew the most attention. His eyes were a deep emerald green, favoring a trimmed go tee, and his blonde hair was up in a band on the back of his head allowing the hair to be drawn down his back. Even his face had a chiseled look.

Resting for the night on a hillside next to a lake, he dismounted from Jadels’ back and removed the reins and saddle, letting him roam for food. Starting a small fire, Evan set to work at making his meal. Once it was ready, he ate slowly. A year had passed since his journey away from home. Looking into the distance, he made out the outline of mountains. That was his destination. He would start a new life. Starting from scratch. Finishing his meal and laying out his blanket, he lay down and stared up into the night sky, watching the stars twinkle back at him. Drinking from his wineskin and putting it away again, he reached over and grabbed onto the hilt of his Longsword. Pulling it to his chest he slowly drifted off to sleep, watching the night sky whirl overhead until his eyes finally shut.

Sitting bolt upright several hours later, his eyes wide, he stared into nothing. Sweat dripped from his face and body. Fumbling for the wineskin in the darkness, he finally found it and pulled the top off. Drinking its contents down heavily, a voice shattered the night causing him to drop the pouch. “You do realize if you drink any more of that, you’re going to be drunk.” Whirling around and snapping up his sword, Evan pointed the sword outward and pointed at the embers in the ring of rocks and bellowed, “Embrazen hir’ Yar.” The embers glowed for a second and with a wave of heat, a five foot flame erupted and glowed brightly. Gazing slowly around the area, Evans eyes slowly adjusted to the sudden light. “Beautiful display of power. But unfortunately, you lack the focus, human.” An insult from an unseen being. “I’m perfectly focused. Now show yourself!” A brief sigh was uttered and a pair of glowing eyes appeared over the top of the fire. “Do you really think that I’m going to hurt you? Lower your sword. I have no reason to fight you.” His eyes finally able to gaze into the surrounding area, Evan could see the outlines of his demon. “What are you?” he asked cautiously. “I’m a dragon. My name is Zumash.”

Evan relaxed his stance and looked up into the dragons eyes. Evan knew that dragons had an immense amount of power. “My name is Evan.” he said with a small bow. “What exactly are you watching over me for, Zumash?” Evan said with curiosity in his voice. Zumashs’’ eyes burned over the fire into Evans. “Well, Evan, I was flying overhead and spotted a smoldering fire and landed nearby. After spotting you next to it I figured to wait until you woke. But you must’ve had a dream and was awoken from it. Now, here we are.” Evan couldn’t understand why Zumash would be rude one moment, and then nice the next. Throwing some wood into the spelled flames and waiting for them to ignite, Evan ended the spell. The sound of wood popping filled the silence until Evan finally looked up. “Well, I’m still quite tired and it’s late. I’m going to rest for awhile. You’re welcome to stay Zumash if you wish.” Evan rolled over again and lay out on his blanket. “Sleep well, Evan.” Zumash said.

figured to put this chapter up. i understand the chapters are short so im trying to work out and make them longer to bring more of the story out. im trying to build upon the other chapters.
here you go! hopefully the last of the short ones.

Chapter Four - Observations and Decisions

As the morning light crept over the land, it made its way over the small campsite. Rolling over, Evan opened his eyes, squinting in the bright light. Sitting up and rubbing his eyes, he looked next to himself. Across the blackened ring of cold embers, Zumash growled softly in his sleep. Letting his eyes run over Zumashs’ body, Evan slowly assessed the dragon before him. Large, powerful wings were tucked against his sides. His scales were a midnight black, but as Evan looked closer, a blue hue rose from within the black. On the end of Zumashs’ long tail was a tri-axial blade.

Although his body was black, the underside of his chin, his chest, stomach, and the underside of his tail were a deep charcoal grey. The claws on the end of his feet and paws were slightly curved and steel colored. His head is what grabbed Evans attention next. There was a pair of pearl colored fangs that hung over his lower lip only enough to be exposed. On the top of his head were two golden horns that went from just on the top of his head, up at a slight angle off the back of his head for about a foot and a half. A tight cluster of very small, duller gold horns surrounded the base of the two main horns. A row of jagged vertical plates ran from the back of his scaly head, to almost the end of his tail, stopping just sort of the bladed end.

A slight movement in Zumashs’ body brought Evan out of his observation. Zumash lifted his head and yawned widely, then looked into Evans eyes. Evan stared into electric green orbs. Standing on all fours, Zumash towered at just under twelve feet tall. His body almost thirty feet long. “Good morning, Evan.” Zumash said in a sleepy tone. “Same to you, Zumash.” Evan replied lightly. Going to the lakes edge, Evan quickly unclothed himself, and with a mighty splash, dove into the lakes cold, mirrored surface. Zumash watched Evan move around in the water. Lying back down, he inspected his wings, stretching them until the stiffness wore out of the joints. With a deep sigh of relief, he gazed over the hillside, sniffing slightly as the breeze changed and lightly kissed over his muzzle. Looking back to the lake, Zumash saw Evan remove himself from the waters embrace. His whole body, muscled and tanned, moved as if he had water in his veins.

Once Evan was clothed, he came back up to the top of the hillside and packed up his belongings. “May I ask where you’re headed?” Zumash asked in a curious tone. Thinking about that question, Evan continued to pack. “Well, I’m actually headed west for awhile and then I’m going to cut north a ways into the mountains. But I’m not stopping until I feel there is no need to continue.” Zumash rose onto his powerful legs. “Would you mind if I came with you? I mean, it’s entirely up to you.” After finishing his packing, Evan whistled lightly and Jadel nickered and came trotting from over the hillside. Snorting from the sight and scent of Zumash, Evan quickly calmed him with a reassuring rub on the neck. “Easy boy, easy. Well Zumash, if you want to come, I would be honored to have you along.” Facing Zumash, Evan approached him and held out a broad hand. “Friends?” he asked. Zumash couldn’t hide the shock on his face but raised a paw and laid it on Evans hand. “Friends.” he said with a dragon-like grin.
