i finally decided to combine chapters 5 and 6 together. i wanted to keep them seperate, but decided since i AM trying to make chapters longer and more enjoyable for people to read, just to combine these two into one.

its a bit rushed. but i had to get this one out of the way so i could hit what was chapter 7 but now 6. so.

Enjoy and thank you all for reading and supporting!

Chapter Five - Tough Emotions and Resupply

Their travels took them from the end of summer right into the cooling months of autumn. Evan learned a great deal about Zumash and the same for Zumash about Evan. They spent the nights in each others company. Talking, joking, arguing occasionally, and even trading spells they had learned. Digging into his pack one night, Evan withdrew a large wrapped block of deer meat. They chose to rest in a shallow cave. Jadel could be seen roaming on the grass plain below their vantage point. Arranging some logs and sticks, Evan quickly ignited the wood with a spell. Soon, warmth coursed through the cave, and Evan began to cook the meat.

With Zumash around, it made hunting easier for Evan. They all kept well fed and fit. Looking up from the cooking meat, Evan watched Zumash for a minute. He was turning solid stone into a liquid form and reshaping it with a series of complex spells and movements. A shape rose from the top of the molten form. Evan spotted a dragon, and then it disappeared as Zumash dropped the spell and the liquid rock. It shattered on the cave floor. His eyes shut tightly, Zumash shook his head. As if to clear sand from his eyes. Returning his attention to the meat, Evan looked as if he was busy with the cooking as Zumash looked up.

They ate in silence. Evan had given Zumash a larger portion of the meat. Insisting that he wasn’t that hungry, Zumash finally took it from Evan. In the fading light, Evan noticed small white fluffs coming from above. Standing and moving to the entrance, Zumash followed and they both gazed skyward. Snow had begun to present itself to the land. Watching it for awhile Zumash finally murred softly. “Ah, the snow. I love this time of the season. Everything covered in a beautiful white. It becomes quiet. Still.” Evan looks sideways at Zumash to find him looking back. Turning to look up at Zumash, something wasn’t right in the dragons’ eyes.

There was something there that Evan had never seen before. Returning to the fire, Evan tossed a few more logs into it. “That also means its going to get cold as well. I better start getting my winter gear ready.” Snapping open some flaps, Evan set to work on removing all of the winter gear he had. Inspecting them one by one; checking for damage. Zumash was taken aback by Evans sudden change in the conversation and nodded his scaly head. “Yes, that would be good.” Turning his eyes back to the clouds above, Zumash continued to watch the snow fall.

Later into that evening, Zumash finally stopped watching the snow long enough to come back to lay near Evan. Watching him repair a ripped boot, he decided to ask. “Where did you come from Evan?” Without looking up from his work, Evan mumbled, “Far east. About three times the distance that we have traveled in this direction. What about you?” Zumash sighed and looked out the caves entrance at the snow that was steadily growing around the front. “North. Where the snow is endless and the skies are clear unless a blizzard comes through.” They both elapsed in a calm silence. Zumash continued to watch Evan well into the night. A growing sense of peace and clam coursed through his scaled body.

Zumashs’ feelings began to take shape as he gazed elsewhere other than Evan. He didn’t know why he felt this way, especially towards a human and another male to make matters worse. He cleaned his claws, inspected his wings, checked to make sure the fire was fueled; anything to keep his thoughts and feelings focused on something other than the sight of Evan and his ongoing work After Evan was done with his repairs to all his stuff, he pulled out a large, heavily furred blanked. Crawling under it, he finally said, “Sleep well, Zumash. I’ll see you in the morning.” “Goodnight, Evan.” Zumash replied. But as Zumash watched Evan slowly drift off to sleep, he remained awake. Staring into the fires light and dance. Wondering just when the time would be right to explain his truest feelings to Evan. Until then, Zumash thought silently to himself, these feelings need to be hidden away and kept secret. Zumash vowed that night not to disrupt their friendship, until that moment he desperately wished for, came.

***
Winter melts away into spring. Evan and Zumash traveled throughout the winter and are now in the warm confines of spring.
***

“Look, all I’m saying is that I think it’s a bad idea!” Zumash exclaimed. “Why? Because you want to come but I’m insisting that you remain here?” Evan shot back hotly. “Evan, look down there. There are soldiers everywhere! If you go in, you might not come back out.” “I’m going down there,” Evan said as he mounted up on Jadel, “to get supplies, and then I will return.” Not looking convinced, Zumash gazed at Evan with what was a questioning look. “Alright, look,” Evan said. “If you see a red ball like this,” raising his hand up and muttering “Sume risa Bishu,” a red ball appeared just above his hand. “You can fly in and get me out of there. Deal?” Ending the spell and looking at Zumash, the dragon finally gave in reluctantly. “Okay, I agree. Just don’t take to long.”

***

Jadels’’ hooves clip-clopped on the cobblestone streets that made up the city of Yar'kigs main road. Watching the path ahead of him, Evan finally realized that he was the center of attention. People gazed up at the towering man that rode on a horse that was far too large. Finding a shop that figured would house what he needed; he pulled on the reins lightly to slow Jadel in front of the shop. Dismounting his horse, Evan was surprised to spot a small boy at his feet gazing up at him. Handing him the reins, Evan gave him some coins and said, “Take care of him for a moment. I’m just going inside to get some supplies.” Nodding, the boy took the reins and the coins and moved off to secure Jadel.

Moving into the interior of the shop, Evan quickly looked around. The walls were covered in everything from small trinkets to large saw discs. A bell tinkled as he had entered and the shopkeeper appeared from around a corner saying, “Good day, sir. How may I…oh my…” The shopkeeper stopped his greeting at seeing the size of Evan. Laughing; Evan said “It’s alright. I get that reaction a lot. Good day to you shopkeeper, I’m just passing through this area and I needed to find everything on this list. Could you help me?” Nodding the shopkeeper moved along the rows with Evan close behind. Handing him the items, they went into a large feeding sack with straps on it.

The process was slow, but Evan was patient. With everything finally in the pack, Evan secured the top tightly. “How much do I owe you?” Calculating the price from the extensive list, the shopkeeper scribbled a price down on the bottom of the list. “It’s a total of three hundred fins, five shos, one cru.” Pulling out his pouch of money, Evan counted out the payment and handed it to the shopkeeper. “Thank you for the help.” Shaking Evans hand vigorously, the shopkeeper bowed and said, “No, thank you, sir. Take care on your journey.” Ducking out of the shop, Evan spotted the young boy with Jadel and moved over. The little boy was atop a high stool brushing the dirt from the hair on Jadels’ sides.

“Very kind of you to do that for him, he needed it.” Evan said with a smile. Nodding, the boy bowed from the stool. “It’s alright, sir. I cleaned out his mane and tail. I even managed to remove the dirt from his hooves.” Surprised that the boy did so much, Evan lifted him off the stool and set him on the wood decking. “Thank you so much for all the hard work you’ve done. Here, this is for you.” Evan pressed a rather large amount of coins into his small hands. His eyes grew wide in excitement. “Oh, thank you sir, thank you.” Patting the boy on his head, Evan kicked off the ground and mounted his saddle. Jadel nickered from the added weight of the sack. Laughing softly as he patted Jadels’ neck, Evan merely said, “It’s alright Jadel. We’re not going far.” Waving to the boy, he maneuvered the horse towards the front gate.

Upon nearing it, however, a line of soldiers moved in his path, and blocked his only means to leave.

Chapter Six - Soldiers and Recollections

Gazing upon the men clad in armor that stood in front of his exit, Evan finally inclined his head to what he believed was the captain. “Afternoon, sir. What seems to be the trouble?” The captain looked up slowly and shifted his sword, trying to make it look casual. “What is your name, and where are you from?” Demanded the captain rudely. Trying to keep his rising temper in check, Evan slowly smiled. “My name is Evan Trazphire. I come from the distant east. I’m just passing through on my way west. Had to pick up some supplies.” he said as he shifted the pack so the captain could get a look at the size of the pack.

Talking to his companions for a moment, the captain slowly turned back to assess Evan. “Well, Evan, we have had reports of raiders and pirates on the trail. Some of our scouts and trading carts have not returned.” Looking from one man to the next, Evan could see that they were ready to strike if he said or did something stupid. Clenching his jaw a couple of times, he looked right into the captains eyes. “Sir? Why would I hijack or steal from people, then ride into town to get supplies? There wouldn’t be any point exposing myself to onlookers that might recognize me as a raider or pirate.” The captain look ed from Evan to the pack, and back again.

-----------------

From his vantage point, Zumash could clearly see Evan make his way into the city’s boarders. Losing sight of him behind a building, the dragon turned away to gaze around their campsite. Cleaning up some of the area, he slowly started a good sized fire. Returning to the ledge about an hour later, his timing couldn’t have been better. Evan was making his way to the front gate, but without warning was stopped by some soldiers. Tensing slightly, he prepared to flash open his wings and dive off the ledge to rescue Evan.

-----------------

After some silence, Jadel nickered and started to get figdity. This must’ve snapped the captain out of whatever he was thinking. “Alright Evan.” Signaling for his men to stand down. “You give a good reason for me to believe you. Hope your journey is a safe one.” Moving out of the way, the soldiers slowly made their ways back to their posts. “Thank you, captain. Take care.” Coaxing Jadel into a trot, Evan steered him up the hillside, and back to the campsite.

-----------------

Zumash relaxed his tense muscles. Evan was allowed to pass. It would be a little bit before he returned so Zumash laid down next to the roaring fire. You know, Zumash thought to himself, Evan is a very different human. I know, he thought back, but would he accept me and my feelings towards him? Why don’t you find out? I cant. Why not? I don’t want to scare him away. Well that does pose a problem doesn’t it? Yes, it does. But you could always just wait longer, and let these feelings build until you lose yourself in them entirely. But I don’t want to. Then just tell him then!

Zumash fought with himself a little more before hearing a branch snap. Looking up surprised, he saw Evan and Jadel coming up the path. Evan saw Zumashs’ look on his face. “What? Are you that surprised to see me?” Evans gaze lingered over the ledge, noticing the claw gouges in the rock. “Ah, I see. You were watching me. And from what I can see, you were about to fly in.” Nodding slowly, Zumash looked away into the fire. Light slowly danced over his face, making his eyes light up from the flames.

Evan merely laughed and unsaddled his horse. Dropping the pack off his back slowly, he untied the top, and laid its contents out on the blanket. Zumash looked up from the fire and watched each object be removed and inspected, then placed out into a group. After Evan had removed everything, Zumash looked up into the sky to see that it was getting dark out. Evan had put everything into his saddle and then returned to the pack to lift it off the ground. “Just one more thing…” Evan mumbled. Zumash swung his head back to Evan.

He had removed a quite large bottle. It’s contents unknow, for the moment. “Alright. What is wrong Evan? I can tell there has been nagging at you for the last few days.” Evan looked up slowly. “What do you mean, Zumash?” His voice was soft and full of, what? Pain? Uncertainty? Zumash couldn’t tell. Standing onto all fours, the dragon approached Evan slowly, looking deep into his eyes the whole time until he stood right in front of him. “Evan, look. Whatever it is that you need to get off your mind, I’m here. I won’t laugh or make fun of you. We’re friends. Understand?” Nodding slowly, Evan made his way back to the fire and sat down. Zumash joined him, laying close. “Well then, since you want to know, I’ll tell you.” Evan retold his tale. From when he and his brother first found the necklace and collar, right up to the meeting of Zumash.

“And now,” Evan said softly, “there’s only a few more weeks until their death anniversary. And you already know I turned twenty just a fortnight ago.” Staring into the bottle in his lap, Evans eyes began to glisten slightly. Zumash murred softly and leaned close to him. “I’m sorry, Evan. I pressed you too far. I shouldn’t have made you relive that.” Evans’ shoulders shook as he cried a little bit. He lifted the bottle and popped the top off in one fluid motion.

Drinking deeply from it, the label was facing Zumash, and he read it with a tilt of his head. Elvin Wine. After a light sigh, Evan looked into Zumashs’ eyes. “Want to try some?” Leaning forward and opening his muzzle a little bit, Evan poured out a small portion. The taste Zumash was hit with was amazing. Sweet and sour at the same time. And when it entered his stomach, made him feel really warm all over. They share the wine back and forth for most of the evening. By the time it had become fully dark out, they were both a bit drunk. Never drinking such a beverage before, Evan knew that he was out of it.
