After cleaning dog hair out of the corners and from under beds for about the fifth time this week, I was curious how much dog hair do the dog owners around here have, is it taking over the house, what do you do with it.
I know there are some that will make blankets or save it for something, but was curious what you all did. |

Imagine golden retriever malamute mix and malamte wolf mix in a 1000 sqft cabin.
I donate the sheddings to a local business lady that spins it into yarn and then kinits sweaters and other items from it. About one third of her income is from pet hair products. |

XD eew. I don't have dogs but we have 2 cats, both semi-short hair mixes.. tONS of cat fur everywhere. I'm not sure I'd want any sort of thing made from my pet's fur.. O_o
'Oh I like your sweater, where did you get it?' "err... its my dog's fur." '....' |

I'm sory that the idea turns you off. To me, I'm always close to my partner. The hair is also naturaly water repellent. Like wool, it will keep you warm when wet.
I live and work in a remote area. I take only what I need and use all that I take. A garmet knitted from pet hair can be the difference between life and death. Often dogs are work animals instead of pets, and are treatd as animals. Mine are friends and companions. I treat them as family and I get love in return. On cold nights(-40 to -60 degrees f. we keep each other warm. Why not use what would nomally be tossed out in the garbage? This post has been edited by Squirllybird on Jun 16 2007, 05:22 AM |

From an older, experienced guy, A L S O look for hair in your refrigurator coils! By the time you notice that your icecream is mealting, and/or your beer is warm, it will be too late to save the old box!! GET THE HAIR out of the coils! himfella :devil2: |

Oh, yeah, just about anywhere you can immagine, even my teeth :D I try to reduce the ammount in my bed and house by giving her a good rub down outside prior to going to bed.

lots and lots. My pillowcases are covered in my husky's fur. My black shirts are nearly white from her fur. I couldn't even wash all the fur off the pillowcases. And at my parents house, they have 10 indoor cats. All short-haired except one. And the shedding leaves lots of fur everywhere. It infests everything.
I don't mind the fur. Luckily, my husky hasn't shed her coat like most of the breed does, but I am sure that when winter comes, she will. I have bags of fur from the other two dogs. I am keeping some of it for myself. |

Before I get the Dyson out my rug usually looks like the dominant colour is black. By the time I put it away the dominant colour is red ;)
When my Husky's blowing coat there's grey tumbleweeds in every corner for about a month, after that things return to (near) normal. |

I groom my dogs daily and still have hair everywere. Thanks for the tip on fridge coils!! I will look into that right away.
Squirllybird, I like your lifestyle ... take what you need and use what you take. I would love to have garments made of my dog's hair. Does your friend deal with outsiders or just locals? Would it be possible to ship raw dog hair to her and get a finished garment back or is she too remote for that sort of thing? Thanks, LTD |

Yeah, Dyson!! If mine ever breaks, I would gladly pay double for a new one! And having smooth floors (no carpet for hair to hide in) does make keeping the house clean a challenge. It's not hard to clean, but next to impossible to KEEP it that way!  |

I'm curious about the dog hair clothing...I've never seen any of it before, but from what I've been told when it gets wet it smells like a wet dog. Is there any truth to that?

One of the running jokes with friends is when they come over for BBQ and beer, and I always tell them, "If you find a dog hair in your food, don't worry, I don't charge extra for that!" :P :P

Mmm dog hair stew.. ;p
I get cat hair in my food all the time. Extra protein, right? Its not so much that it turns me off, Squirrly.. its practical and all especially in your situation.. I don't have a dog but I'm planning on an English/American Mastiff and they've got extremely short hair.. would take a long time too... If the fur is kept in good condition and collected right away as well as washed good beforehand, it would be more sanitary and easier.. |
