I don't think that its a chemical thing. I think that its more likely one of two things:
(1) He knows and isn't saying as he doesn't want you to stop.
OR
(2) He doesn't know, and is being excited because you are more sexually aroused.

I've heard that psychiatrists have recently been doing studies in the US, and have found that males need to be "chased" as much as females do. The difference is in the way that it occurs. The study found that males tend to sexually desire a situation where the female is sexually aroused in them, is desiring the encounter, and allows the male to control the situation ... which sounds like the situation that you were describing.

Perhaps after each encounter with your K9, you became in his eyes like a wild animal (ie: more seductive) ... if he has zoo interests then naturally that will make him more interested.

That aside, I would recommend to tell him. Perhaps you could inquire with him as to the material that you found ... and then let him know that your into such.

Maybe your husband suspects that you already knows his secret. I usually know when somebody has been into my stuff because it isn't the way I left it. I have to agree with the others that you should find a way to tell your husband, or at least determine if he knows about you. If he does, then openly approach him about your desires and experiences to be with the neighbors dog. He may even go out and get you a suitable replacement.

The other side of it: If this has been going on for so long and you both are happy with things they way they are now. It may not be a bad thing to just enjoy things the way they are. If he does find out one day, then it seems to me that he may not be upset with you for anything other than not telling him you are active and enjoying sex with a K9 lover. I can't imagine him being upset you have a K9 lover, if the HDD is in fact his.
