Many of the stories posted lose a great deal of their appeal due to misspellings.
I suggest that a system such as " Microsoft Word" be made available to edit the postings. Regardless of this improfection, if that is the correct terminogoly and spelling, I get great satisfaction from reading true stories posted here. Thank you. From pick_7 What happened to your spell check? You only posted a few sentences, ( and mis-spelled 2 words doing it )imagine if you had written 3 pages   This post has been edited by pick_7 on Aug 19 2006, 04:33 AM |

many of the users here do not have english as a first language... and many dont care(like me) whether we spell correctly or not.. If this is something that bothers you maybe you should copy and paste the story into your version of "word" and correct the mistakes .. other than that... please remember this rule...

I don't know of any BBS that implements a spell checker. It would not be a trivial task to do it on this one. For people who do want to use spell checkers then try installing the Google Toolbar, it has a facility that does just that on web page forms. For readers who get peeved by spelling errors... tough. Just be grateful that the author gave up their time to entertain you. There are varying degrees of education within the users of BF, some can't spell, some are dyslexic some are dyspraxic, but all have imagination. Personally I think they shouldn't be put off expressing their imagination because they think someone with an anal personality is going to give them a negative critique based on their spelling. ...and no I didn't spell check this... I couldn't be arsed. PS Before you go off on a generic spelling flame, perhaps you should make the same effort you want others to make. It has been my life long philosophy that others must take me as they find me, in return I extend the same courtesy to them.
In an enviroment such as this forum it would be "bad form" to be critical of others. It seems to me that good manners are vital in this place. That said sometimes one has to read a post several times and fill in the gaps to make sense of it, especially when english is not the posters first language, just remember that person will have similar problems understanding what is being said to them. Err! Mr Hamster. Sir. You really had me reaching for Google with "dyspraxic". This post has been edited by Saffron580 on Aug 19 2006, 05:07 AM |

It may be a good advice for story-writers to use a wordprocessing-program like Word or, if Word is too expensive, Open Office. It is much easier writing in such a wordprocessor than in the forum and the spelling is checked, people with foreign languages have to switch the language to english.
The procedure for getting the post into the forum is : In Wordprocessor, type CTRL-A followed by CTRL-C Switch to the forum, make a new post, the cursor is located in the field for typing in. Type CTRL-V and the text is copied into the input-field. Now you can write additional info and send the message to the forum. This is only needed for stories when you fear that your story may be missunderstood because of bad spelling. For normal posts this is too complex and costs some time. On the other hand you can save your story to your harddisk and hand it to other people if needed. |

Professionaly, I deal with many people who's first language is not English (or American). Their spelling and usage are horrible. When speakink to them, they are difficult to understand. this is because of poor usage and a very heavy accent.
I have taught myself to listen and read carefully and to read between the lines fill in the blanks. When speaking to them, I may ask them to slow down or repeat a few words. I also watch body language as a hint to what they are trying to express. A good example is differences between English and american usages. We might say something that is "normal" to us (US) that the Brits find offensive or it could be the other way around. Please be patient and think. |
