I've decided I want to find myself a companion, and would like some tips for locating a larger breed bitch puppy.
I don't really know how to approach the question as to why i wouldn't want a mutt puppy spayed before i got her.. I don't have the money at the moment to buy a pure-bread (which makes more sense not to spay an AKC Great Dane puppy). But i'd like to have at the ready the 'right things to say' as to why i'm looking for a dog that isn't spayed. I'm really hoping to find a dane or weimeraner bitch puppy (so i can get her used to my cats, so she will get along with them). I'm thinking a dog will be a great companion for me to take out to the lake in my truck. But being a zoo, i'd like to keep the door open for a physical relationship should that come into play, and i don't want her spayed. |

Good topic, LuvFem, I've had these questions also.
I'm going to be getting a Husky soon, and am trying to get tons of information together before I take the leap. |

Same could be asked for a male dog too (non-neutered). Most rescue shelters spay/neuter a dog prior to adoption it seems, and Im not sure I have the income to afford a dog straight from a breeder :(

B)
you are correct, in that most dogs you get from shelters will be "fixed". Try reading the adds in the so called local advertisers newspapers! oh-- - welcum! himfella :devil2: |

If you cannot afford a pure-bred, quality dog.. you may not have much luck finding an intact one.
If you buy a show quality dog, usually breeders will not require spay/neuter.. but they usually will require something about the dog must be shown in order to breed, etc. You can try craigslist and more often than not find intact animals.. but you need to be careful because many animals from craigslist have underlying issues- whether health (from a backyard breeder) or psychological. But, there are good dogs out there that can be rescued. Very few rescues will have intact dogs.. Some do. 99% of the ones that happen to have an intact animal are because they are too young (giant breeds like Great Danes are best spayed/neutered a bit later, 6-12 months) will usually require a spay/neuter. You may be able to personally contact a rescue like that though, and request a female puppy. Say that while you do not agree with a complete removal of the uterus, you wouldn't mind at all just tying her tubes or doing a partial removal of the ovaries... She will still come into heat, but she will not be able to get pregnant. There are also two (that I know of) hormone treatments in the US. Both are not that great; they can cause additional health problems and I believe one isn't even recomended to use beyond two years. |

Best to get one from a private individual who got one but can't keep it ( Got too big, moving, called up, new baby, whatever). Lots of "real" papers (not the free advertisers) have a Pet Adoption listing, usually on Sunday. Shelters and Rescues are pretty non-negotiable on the spay thing--it's in the contract, they couldn't change it if they wanted to. Also, they take personal information, which you may or may not be OK with. Private people probably won't insist on spaying, but if they do, just say thanks, but intact ones live longer and have fewer "old age" problems. Sometimes people are willing to let you not spay if you don't take the papers (so you wouldn't be selling puppies). Oh, and Craigslist seems to be overflowing with self-righteous nutcakes lately, so don't let them ruin your day..........

I get my dogs from individuals who advertize in newspapers or at vets' offices. I live fairly close to a military post so there are always families shipping out who won't take their dog along.

I would just check the classifieds...maybe Craigslist while you're at it. A lot of times people are trying to rehome an accidental litter and wont get them fixed before they are given to you.
