BeastForum.com > Howto's, FAQ's and Technical Help > Fonts, Links, & Copy/paste Functions

Posted by: cbmx Mar 20 2006, 02:06 AM
I have received a large number of PM's on how-to use the Font options, Create Links and use the Copy/Paste Fuctions in the past Year... I know there are many here that have no idea on how to use these features and would like to know how... It will also save me some time by directing members here. smile.gif

3 Posts are to follow, Fonts, Copy/Paste & Links, also feel free to add any other good suggestions to this thread on other features.

FONTS:

In your post or signature when you want to change the font options from standard boring to... Bold, Font, Size, Italic, Underline & Color... follow these steps:

When in the text box, select your font options using the buttons directly above the text box.

Here is an example:

I want to use Bold text, Sized Large & Colored Blue.... Click on "B" then Size and Large, then Color and Blue.

What will happen is a Tag will appear after making each selection: (Note: The following appears in a Code Box to avoid the function from activating within this post)
CODE
[B][SIZE=Large][COLOR=Blue]

Now type your text after the tags.

When you are done with your line of text click on "Close All Tags"... Closing tags will automatically appear.

This is what you will have:
CODE
[B][SIZE=7][COLOR=blue]Example Text[/COLOR][/SIZE][/B]

And this is how it will apprear when posted: Example Text

You may also change your Font Options in the same line of text... like changing colors, just remember to click "close all tags" when you are done.

Any text after the closing tags will appear as normal... Just repeat the steps above for your next line of text if you want more fancy Fonts.

The Bold, Italic and Underline Buttons also have a toggle feature which allows you to close the tag by clicking on the same button again.

Hope this helps. smile.gif

My Next Post Will Be Copy/Paste Functions...

Posted by: cbmx Mar 20 2006, 06:07 AM
Copy and Paste:

We have had alot threads recently that make good use of the Copy/Paste function of your computer.
The Copy/Paste function is also useful for copying links from other parts of the forum that can be pasted into a post or your signature.

Copying Text:

To copy text from a post to use elsewhere do this:

At the beginning of the text press down and hold the left mouse button and drag it across the text... This will highlight the text as you move the mouse along it.

Release the left mouse button at the end of the text you want to copy... The text will remain highlighted.

Right click with the mouse over the highlighted text and select "COPY"... This will store the text in memory.

Now you can copy the text in memory to any post or your signature... To do this... just right click by the area you want to add the text and select "PASTE".

Your text in memory will appear... simple as that. smile.gif

Copying Links:

Copying links is as simple as copying text.

Any link on the forum that you would normally left click on to open (ie: a movie thread or other posts or even members names) ..can be copyed into memory.

Instead of Left clicking to open a thread... right click on it instead and select "COPY SHORTCUT"

This puts the link into memory and it can now be pasted into any other post or your signature by Right Clicking and selecting "PASTE".

When you select paste... The URL appears (example: http://www.beastforum.com/showforum-2.html) .. and it becomes an active link to click on in your post... Clicking on it in your post will redirect a member to that link.

Hope This Helps smile.gif

My Next Post Will Be Creating Links like in my Signature smartass.gif

LINKS

Ever wonder how links are created like in my signature? ...Only the name of the thread shows and not the URL to it.

Pasting URL's like discussed in the above post can be ugly since they are very long and do not discribe where they will send you.

What can be done is replace it with a discription the can be clicked on.

First of all, if you want to redirect a member to your post... Copy the link as discribed above using the copy function.

Then in your post or signature click on the "http://" Button above the text box and paste the link into the window that appears.

Click OK then a new prompt appears showing "My Webpage".

Replace that text with whatever best discribes your post... and click OK.

Automatically the system creates a link in your text box.

Example:
CODE
[URL=http://www.beastforum.com/showforum-2.html]How-To Section[/URL]

And this is what will be displayed on your Post or Signature: http://www.beastforum.com/showforum-2.html

Clicking on the link will in this case send you to the how-to's section.

I copyed this link simply by right clicking on "How-to's Section" and selecting "Copy Shortcut"

Like my signature, you can add as many as you like by repeating the steps above.

Hope this Helps Out. smile.gif

Hmmm, Lets see if THIS technique works with Firefox.

Posted by: MrIronhead Mar 20 2006, 07:46 PM
Ahhh, sweet!!!! I wasnt aware of this particular coding technique. I usually would highlight any of the text I wanted to modify, and then click on the code buttons which I wanted to modify the text with.

Now, the technique I just mentioned works great with I.E., but does not work with Firefox.

The technique described by cbmx works well with the Firefox browser, and I am VERY appreciative for this information.

So, for all you Firefox users who didnt know this, but want to add a bit of snazz to your text, this is a wonderful piece of information for you. Good info for all browser users as well.

Thanks alot cbmx for this information, and a big ten for ya from me. smile.gif

Now, if I only knew how to get full use of the smilies with the Firefox browser. wacko.gif

NOTE: To all Firefox users who use this, Ive realized the technique only works if you use it immidiately for the text you are modifying at the time. If you try to go back to previous text you typed to modify it, the code symbols will end up at the bottom of the reply box, same thing with the smilies.

So, just remember to add your code or smilies where you intend to put them before typing any additional text and they will end up where you intended for them to be. smile.gif

This REALLY should be a sticky. eusa_think.gif

smile.gif your welcome, glad it was useful information to you.

BROWSE FUNCTION

The Browse function works the same way as when you a save file to download and search for the location or folder to download it to.

Instead of finding a place to save the file to... your looking for the movie or picture you want to upload to the forum.

... kinda working in reverse wink.gif

Once you found the movie clip or picture file and click on it the browse window disappears and the file path (location) will appear in the box next to the browse button.

Now all you do is type your post and click "add reply" ...be patient with the upload of your file as the forum will seem like it froze up while it transfers... once your post with the file uploads your post complete with your file will appear.

The best place to test this out would be in the TEST section of the forum if still unsure, just remember the copyright rules still apply there also.

Hope that helps smile.gif

Hi Mach:

Not completely sure if there is a easy way, what you can do is download a free screen capture program and record or take snapshots of the action... you can select the area of the screen to capture also... the program will save the captures as jpeg's or bitmaps.

Me personally have actually taken digital pics of the screen when desperate.. laugh.gif laugh.gif

The easiest way is to download and install the freeware image viewer IrfanView ( http://www.irfanview.com )

Then under File first choose "Select Twain Source", then select your webcam from the list. Click Select.

Then from File choose "Acquire/Batch Scanning", select the option you want (single pic or multiples), click okay then wait for the image to arrive on the screen and click the "take picture" button when you see the one you like.

This procedure cn actually be done in most graphics apps that support Twain Aquiring/scanning.

You should consider writing a handbook on simple computer procedures. You do an EXCELLENT job of explaning things. I sent a copy of some of your procedures to my son via email today and I think it will be of help to him in understanding some of the methods. When I try to teach him these things he doesnt seem to get it. Glad I didnt have to teach him to drive. smile.gif

Posted by: cbmx Jun 13 2007, 04:20 AM
There is no spell checker on this forum, best thing would be to run another window with an on-line spell checker for words you want to check on.

Spelling errors will be a common thing here since people all over the world visit this place, many not having English as their first language.

We all make mistakes. wink.gif

Does the board not allow IMG tags for sigs?

No, there was a time when that worked but no longer allowed/blocked because it defeats the downloading credit system.

Thanks a bunch.

Posted by: cbmx Nov 10 2007, 04:38 AM
Sorry about the slow reply, I dont check here very often. For your avatars I recommend using JPEG images. Auto-scale will usually reduce your image to something 200x200 or less. If you continue having problems use some image editting software and crop/resize it to under 200x200 and it should work.

You cannot add to the original post window once the "edit" button closes (about 20 minutes). You add to your thread with the "Add Reply" button, just like you posted this post.

To make a link that is a web address like: http://www.beastforum.com/showtopic-78966.html
just copy it and paste it in your post.

To make one like this:

http://www.beastforum.com/index.php?showtopic=78966&view=findpost&p=1360186

just go to that link ^ and Sheppy will explain.

I finally found what I was looking for. However, Sheppy didn't answer a question that I was also interested in: When you post a picture, does it also put a thumbnail in your post?

Posted by: neandernitz Aug 5 2009, 05:00 AM
If you mean the thumbnail of a video (screenshot), you have to use software and make a pic, post the pic, and the system makes the thumbnail.

You mean your standard thumbnail of a pic, like this? That's automatic--no action required.

Posted by: Little Stallion Aug 5 2009, 09:49 PM
Yes, just the standard pic, not video. I thought it might do automatically but wasn't sure.
I'm trying to get a picture procured of April, but I understand that one has to have at least two pics in order to post
