| As a result of the comments and repllies in my poll, I've decided to go for broke and give this a go. It is going to be an enormous undertaking, but for all my friends who have asked to see just what it's like down here, I'll do my damndest to make this thread as interesting and varied as possible. I've been amassing material all day so far It will have to be done in various 'sections' to try to keep some sort of order from what could easily turn into sheer chaos owing to the diversity of material. the sections will be in the following order:- 1/ Capital Cities 2/ Suburban life 3/ Recreation and Sport 4/ Central Australia 5/ The Far north 6/ Outback Aus' 7/ Tropical Queensland 8/ Indigenous Australians 9/ Wildlife - both Benign and Dangerous This list may be added to depending on two things... A/ You want to see more? B/ I actually live long enough to get that far! To keep the thread running smoothly, I ask that you please post any questions or points of discussion at the end of each section, where I will pause for this purpose before proceeding to the next section. (I will let you know when each section is finished). If any of my Aussie compatriots feel like adding to the thread, please feel free, but again, I stress that it is VITAL you keep the topic of your post in keeping with that section only! It is now 2:30am and I've been at this all afternoon, so here's your chance to make any opening comments before I begin in ernest tomorrow with Section 1. Errrrr...Wish me luck |

| I've always made friends quickly with the Aussies, and had so many GOOD friends from Australia. Don't even mind the vegemite. But for some reason I've never had a desire to visit. Not even a little. Here's a good thread for it. Can someone talk me into wanting to go? My impression has always been - too dry, too hot, too flat, too dull ... and everything is poisonous. But other than that, sounds great. I wanna be a convert. Let's have it!!! |

| To all the replies so far, THANKYOU... The more I put in however, the more I see I've left out! But hey just how much can one do? Yes...by all means, if anyone sees anything I should have included, and there WILL be a lot, then please feel free to contribute what you have at the end of the appropriate sections, but once again I ask that you keep your material appropriate to that particular category...otherwise the thread will get bogged down with material in the wrong categories and my poor ol' brain'll get confused. Continuing now... Perth W.A. 1. |

| OK...So that's the Capital cities of each State. I'll leave off now until tomorrow. There are so many more pictures of these cities, but many that I have cannot be published due to photographic copyright. Of course there are many many in-between 'Provincial' cities and major towns, but for obvious reasons I haven't included these. Section 1 is complete now and I would welcome your comments and posts if you have some on the cities that you may wish to contribute at this point. This so far is just the 'tip of the iceberg' and I have much eye opening info' to add later as we progress through it. Towards the end, I will be including a section on 'Wildlife', most of which are harmless and cuddly, but will also be including here all of our dangerous creatures that you'd be well advised to BACK OFF from! A final request 'though...PLEASE keep any added pics or info' here, strictly related to section 1 (Cities) Thankyou. (Next section will deal with 'Suburban') |

| I've had a few friends visit from the UK thinking they'll be able to see the major cities of Australia in a week - due to the distances involved that would only be possible from about 30,000 feet. All you'd see would be the airports Just as an indication, here are a few inter-city distances to see the Eastern Cities Melbourne - Sydney 892 km (you could add about 60km and drop in on Canberra on the way) Sydney to Brisbane - 962 km Brisbane to Cairns - 1718 km If you want to go right across the country, say from Sydney to Perth via Adelaide, you're talking 4117 km. While I'm here I might also add a few more Perth photos - out of the capitals I've spent time in I think Perth was my favourite. First is a pic from Kings Park looking NorthEast at the city centre |

Cohort buddy, Aus' is a lot like BF...Until you join up you never know what it's really like! I'm sure you'd be pleasantly surprised and as long as ya don't go swimmin' with the Salt water croc's, pokin' your finger at an aggro' Sydney Funnelweb, or trying to get sexually familiar with a Tasmanian devil...She'll be right mate! (that'd be sorta like getting under neecec's or southy's skin! Oh and as far as the locals are concerned, just bring plenty o' beer and you'll fall in love with the place! Anyway, just think of the countless subtle inflections and uses of the word Ba |

| It seems I've been somewhat remiss in clarifying for others who may not know, what is common knowledge to all in Australia. I have been asked by a member if I would explain and I send my apologies to any and all who are equally in the dark. I refer to the abbreviations used for the Australian States... They are as follows: Victoria = (Vic) New South Wales = (NSW) Queensland = (Qld) Nothern Territory = (NT) Western Australia = (WA) South Australia = (SA) Tasmania = (Tas) Australian Capital Territory = (ACT) |
| Posted by: southflorida Jul 14 2006, 03:06 PM | ||||
doesn't sound very -ummmm complimentary maybe ole southy needs to shuffle on over and slam some -errr consiousness in thier poofts actually I've heard that there is a large gay community there any major gay cities? san fran equivalents? or? |
| Posted by: furisforfun Jul 14 2006, 03:19 PM |
| I don't know how the gay community comares to other places in the world, but Sydney hosts one of the largest Gay Pride festivals in the world, The Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Here's the Wikipedia write up on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Gay_and_Lesbian_Mardi_Gras Maybe one of the Sydneysiders can comment on it? |
| Posted by: fester3156 Jul 14 2006, 04:09 PM |
| I don't really know much about the gay/lesbian lifestyle so aren't qualified to make sensible comment. And south You'll know I'm sure, that I made those comments all in good fun, there was no malice or ridicule intended. In fact I have a lot more respect for you as a person than you probably realise! I do agree with fur that the place for gays and lesbians would have to be Sydney...mainly I think because they're more upfront about it and the pace in general, is much faster. Melbourne is catching up in many ways to her older 'sister' Sydney, but is still fairly staid by comparison...(and that's the way uh-huh uh-huh I like it!) But that sure don't mean we're all 'angels' and 'Choirboys' down here. ...Ohhhh Nooo! a few pics... |

Quote: The famous Aussie spread! The great Australian icon has been around for more than 80 years. Made in Australia, by Australians and for Australians. One of the world's richest known sources of Vitamin B. 24 million jars are sold each year in supermarkets alone. "It's an Australian icon," says expat author Kathy Lette. "Right up there with Phar Lap and Thorpedo and Kylie and Kidman." Enquote It is a salty, 'savoury' tasting spread...Dark Chocolate brown in colour. Basically, it's a concentrated yeast extract and is crammed full of vitamins and other goodies. To those unaccustomed to it, it may have an uhhhh...'acquired' taste, but we Aussies were all brought up on it! To really enjoy it to the full, it sould be spread on nice fresh 'crusty' bread preferably still warm from the oven. Ohhh YUM! It is also makes a very nourishing drink by mixing a teaspoonfull (or more according to taste) in hot water. Especially in cases of someone suffering an illness and unable to hold down solid food. It is very similar to one you may know, called 'Bonox'. |
| Posted by: fester3156 Jul 14 2006, 04:58 PM |
| Here is a breakdown of what is in Vegemite and roughly how it is made. (from the makers themselves) Quote: Brewer's yeast is a good source of vitamin B, but live yeast tastes boring, it is poorly digested, and it can even strip vitamin B from the gut. Inactivated yeast lacks the disadvantages, but is still bland. The answer is autolysis: using the yeast's own enzymes to break it down. Spent brewer's yeast is sieved to get rid of hop resins, and washed to remove bitter tastes. Then it is suspended in water at a temperature greater than 37 C with no nutrients: the yeast cells die, and vitamins and minerals leach out. Then the proteolytic (protein-splitting) enzymes take over, breaking the yeast proteins down into smaller water-soluble fragments, which also leach out. The yeast cell membrane is unruptured during this time, and can be removed by centrifuging. The clear light brown liquid is then concentrated under a vacuum to a thick paste (the vacuum helps preserve flavours and vitamin B1, thiamine). It is seasoned with salt, and a small proportion of celery and onion extracts to increase the palatability. Vegemite is sold in a range of sizes up to 910 gram (2 pound) jars, and in bulk in giant tins which must contain about 5 kg of the stuff. Only sissies buy anything less than a 227 gram jar. Enquote |
| Posted by: fester3156 Jul 14 2006, 05:11 PM |
| I personally prefer the flavour of 'Promite'. It is not quite as salty and is according to the label, a 'Vegetable extract'...Still with the yeast etc and all the same goodies. |

| There's just a few more pics I wanna gather and then I'll launch into the next section. This was to be on 'Suburbs', but I will change this from sect' 2 to sect' 3 In there, I'd like to show as many examples of life in the suburbs that I can think of: Housing, Shopping, local transport, Cinemas, Childrens' Playgrounds, Schools & colleges and whatever else I can get. Many of these will be from my own local area, 'cos I'll be taking them 'on the spot' myself and will have to travel around a fair bit. I'll try to show the different house styles according to income levels, including the av'ge family, the 'yuppie' class, the obscenely wealthy and the 'not so fortunate', 'underdog'....This hopefully will range from av'ge 3 br family home, rental & 'own your own' units, 'Terrace' and Town House accom', City apartment blocks (for the privellaged) and a few multi-million $$$$ mansions. I think it's a great idea to continue this trend for 'general chit chat' in between sections..agreed? OK...So I'll make Section 2 on Sport & Recreation but only spend time on what is appropriate to Australia (after all, we have ALL the same sports that you do!) 'Suburbs' will become Section 3. |

| hehe fester there is a contentious mix of peanut paste and peanut butter and steady on it doesnt take that long to get there, but in any case it is well worth the journey. if you need any more pics or info from west oz give me a shout ive got loads brilliant job |

| What a great thread, thanks to everyone who has contributed. Fester I would like to know about the great huge water spurting in Canberra (3rd pic) is it a fountain? or a geyer? looks pretty spectacular. I am not a city person but I have to say the cities there do look so much cleaner than the ones here. Hopefully one day I may get the chance to visit some of them |

| Excellent topic fester!! Thank You!! I have always wanted to go to Australia but have not made that happen yet. My son did go there (Melbourne, Australia) for a semester when he was in college. He loved the place!! My daughter opted for a semester in London. |

That would be great southern thankyou. But could ask as I've now dealt with Perth, that you please post them in the next 'in-between' general chit chat part between the sections? Hope you don't mind me asking this. But if you have any shots of housing, or suburban developments, local transport, or anything you feel is unique to WA suburbia, we could slip 'em in there while we're on that Section 3. |

shy That is the 'Capt' James Cook Memorial Fountain' on Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra ACT The lake is named after the Architect Walter Burley Griffin who drew up the original Design and Planning for the layout of city Yes, it is a fountain (and is floodlight at night.) |

Wellllll To give everyone an idea of what's yet to come, here's a screen capture of the folders (so far) I am filling up for further thread content. The cities section (as a folder) is the only one now finished with. The rest are yet to come...and there may well be further folders yet to be added |

| I will now start SECTION 2 Sport & Recreation Aussies are renowned sports fanatics...we'll gamble on a coupl'a flies crawing on a sheep's bum! Some o' you 'yank' servicemen might've even joined some Aussie 'diggers' in a good natured game of '2 up'! We love all the same things you folks do, but we have our own 'Aussie rules footie' (our brand of football) Btw...in the word 'footie' the 't' is pronounced as 'd' and the 'oo' is said as in 'foot'...not as in 'food'...so it's Footie! and it comes across much better if you're 'half pissed' (inebriated)...got it? It is politically incorrect to say 'football!' And when we play footie, we don't wear pooncie body armour either! apart from that...whatever you'se mob play, we do too....Hell...We even play Baseball! AND Grid iron 'Footie'! So...here we go. And I'll start with 'Aussie rules' footie. Section 2 1/ |

| Once, the average Aussie would never condescend to playing the European game of Soccer. Over the years, however, with the influx of migrants bringing the sport with them, it gradually began to grudgingly be 'tolerated' Gradually 'though, it has caught on more and more with the children of these earlier migrants growing up and forming serious clubs. Well now...Who hasn't heard of our very own 'Socceroos'! Yayyyy! Suddenly, Soccer is becoming a widely accepted Aussie sport now. During the world cup, there were unprecedented public outpourings of delerious support for our blokes over there! And you know the rest Bloody referee! Soccer 1' |

| Horse Racing Every country enjoys it's horseracing, but we have one particular race that is famed all over the world. The 'Melbourne Cup' Melbourne Cup Day is Australia's most famous Tuesday. It's a day when the nation stops whatever it's doing to listen to the race call, or watch the race on TV, and even those who don't usually bet, try their luck. At 3.00pm AEST, on the first Tuesday in November, Australians everywhere stop for one of the world's most famous horse races - the Melbourne Cup. In Melbourne, Cup Day is the peak of the Spring Racing Carnival, when champagne and canapés, huge hats and race track fashions sometimes overshadow the business of the day - horse racing. Said American writer, Mark Twain, of a visit to the Melbourne Cup in 1895: "Nowhere in the world have I encountered a festival of people that has such a magnificent appeal to the whole nation. The Cup astonishes me." Racegoers in all their finery under the rose arches of Flemington Racecourse Image courtesy of the Victoria Racing Club and Getty Images The first Melbourne Cup was run in 1861 at Flemington race course and was won by Archer. It has run every year since. Through wars and depression, and the good times too, the Melbourne Cup racing carnival has been one of the stayers of Australian cultural experience. One of the world's most challenging horse races The Melbourne Cup is one of the world's most challenging horse races, and one of the richest (total prize money for 2005 - $AU5.1 million), and picking a winner is not easy. The race is run over 3200 metres and is a handicapped race. This means that the better the horse is, the more weight it has to carry in the race. |

I'll now move on to Recreation, but am ready for a break right now. | This seems like a good time to demonstrate an example of our 'Accent' down 'ere. This is one of a series on different subjects , done by a comedian taking off one of our famous/infamous characters...'Mark (chopper) Reid'. It's also appropriate 'cos it's on Sports. Note also...the correct way to say 'Footie' Now I have to WARN that the language in here is pretty rough!!! But it has been Mod 'approved' for use in this case. The full clip is 27.4 Mb (Mpg) so I've had to split it into 3 with HJ Split for posting. Called "Chopper's Commonwealth Games" 1 of 3 |

| Continuing now with Recreation We down here enjoy all the same activities our Northern cousins do. It might surprise you, but although we enjoy a temperate climate, we do have snow in the alps in Winter and many of us enjoy our skiing weekends away from the weekly 'ratrace'. ...(not this little black duck! I hate snow!...although it does look very scenic I guess). I've included in this category, the 4 main ski resorts of Mt Kosciusko (Australia's tallest mountain), Mt Hotham, Mt Buller, and Thredbo. I'll also include some shots of cross-country skiing. I'll begin with this aspect of it:- 1. Kosciusko Mount Kosciusko is situated in the Australian Alps in SE Australia,98KM S.W of Cooma N.S.W, and within the Kosciusko National Park. Mount Kosciusko rises to 2228m. The highest mountain in Australia. The Park covers more than 600,000ha and is the largest National Park in Australia. |

| All this Alps and Snow fun might be an eye opener for many who see Australia as a land of scorched arid and enlessly flat earth (sure we do have that!), but everybody knows that we Aussies also have 'some' of the best beaches in the world. Because so much of the interior is unforgiving uninhabitable desert, most of our population is concentrated all around our coastline. This means that every Capital city (except Canberra) is situated at, or has close access to the sea. It's not surprising that we have an affinity with 'Sun & Surf'. The diversity of our beaches is perhaps a little lesser known. We have Surf beaches (some with trecherous rips & tides unsuitable for swimming), others famous for surfing, with Lifeguard patrols on constant alert, sheltered beaches suitable for families with children or just for lazing in the sin Errrr...sun So...here are just some of these: 1. (thinking of Beavis here) |

| 8. my own 4wd in more adventurous days I had plenty of much better shots of some of my trips into the 'Grampians', Little Desert etc. with the vehicle fully loaded up with provisions & eauipment. Also some taken in the snow (chains fitted) in the 'High Country', but unfortunately these were lost somewhere in the move when my ex' and I split up. This is the only picture I have left now...a 'sunday drive' compared to what I'd like to have shown |
